The lifestyle of Apis cerana is similar to that of the Western Honeybees, and like Apis mellifera it is used in apiculture with modern moveable comb hives.
Two dozen geographic races of the Western Honeybee, Apis mellifera, have been recognised, adapted to a range of environments from the cold Continental climate of Eastern Europe, through the moist temperate climate of the Atlantic seaboard, the warmth of the Mediterranean, and the heat of the tropics and semi-deserts.
The "A. mellifera" (1758) or "A. mellifica" (1761) of Linnaeus is but one small section of the Dark European Honeybee whose natural territory included the island of Corsica and ranged from the Pyrenees over Europe north of the Alps to the Ural Mountains in the East, and included Great Britain and Ireland and southern Sweden.

Honey bee - Apis mellifera: More Information - ARKive
In Germany the native race Apis mellifera mellifera is now thought to be extinct, as it has been completely replaced by the introduced Apis mellifera carnica (6).
A more recent threat to the species in Britain is the mite Varroa jacobsoni, which is devastating honey bee populations around the world (4) and was first found in Britain in 1992.
The European Commission has set up the 'Beekeeping and Apis Biodiversity in Europe' (BABE) project, which aims to conserve local subspecies of Apis mellifera, and to maintain the genetic uniqueness of local populations (6).
