Topic: Aplite

  Aplite - LoveToKnow 1911
Aplites are usually very fine-grained, white, grey or flesh-coloured, and their constituents are visible only with the help of a magnifying lens.
The aplites of granite areas, for example, are the last part of the magma to crystallize, and correspond in composition to the quartzo-felspathic aggregates which fill up the interspaces between the early minerals in the main body of the rock.
The essential components of the aplites are quartz and alkali felspar (the latter usually orthoclase or microperthite).

Aplite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Aplite in petrology, the name given to intrusive rock in which quartz and felspar are the dominant minerals.
Dykes and threads of aplite are very frequently to be observed traversing granitic bosses; they occur also, though in less numbers, in syenites, diorites, quartz-diabases and gabbros.
Riebeckite-granites (paisanites) have close affinities to aplites, shown especially in the prevalence of alkali felspars.

 Aplite, pegmatite, and felsophyre dikes
A zone of aplite and pegmatite dikes were emplaced along the contact between the metavolcanic and plutonic rocks in the Alabama Hills.
The aplites and pegmatites are interrelated which is indicated by the fact that some aplites have segregations of coarse textured pegmatites.
A rock that is physically separated from the pegmatite and aplite dikes by greater than a mile is the felsophyre dike in the north end portion of the hypabyssal rocks.

Report of Activities 1999: Kontak No. 3
Aplite and coarser leucogranite sheets are dominated by quartz, K-feldspar and albitic plagioclase, with lesser amounts of muscovite and rare cordierite.
The aplite samples fall near the ternary minimum for water-saturated haplogranite (Tuttle and Bowen, 1958) and near the average aplite for the SMB (Ham et al., 1988); however, the aplites also define a trend plotting toward the K-feldspar samples.
Plagioclase feldspar in leucogranite and aplite varies from An to An composition, as is typical of this mineral phase in evolved granites, including the SMB (MacDonald et al., 1992).

Three types of aplite have been distinguished: (1) 'blue-aplite', a bluish, marginally chilled facies composed of albite and quartz with minor apatite, tourmaline, orthoclase and colour-less lithia-mica; (2) 'white aplite' composed of albite, quartz and light-pink lithia-mica; and (3) 'brown aplite' which is coarser, metasomatised, with pink-brown lithia-mica and more quartz.

Olympus Microscopy Resource Center: Polarized Light Microscopy Gallery - Aplite
Also known as haplite, aplite is an intrusive igneous rock that chiefly consists of quartz and feldspars.
Aplite is light in color and exhibits a granular texture, similar to that of sugar.
Aplite does, however, frequently occur with pegmatite, a similar rock that is more coarsely grained.

Aplite and Pegmatite Dikes – Anza Borrego SP Quick Description: The dikes are in a road cut along the highway.
The difference between the two types of dikes is the grain size; aplite grains are small while pegmatite grains are large.

Aplite cuts, fills fractures and envelopes the pegmatitic microcline and quartz within the dikes.
Aplite consists of undeformed albite, interstitial quartz, accessory garnet, opaques and epidote.
In this case aplite genesis may incorporate aspects of both pressure and compositional quenching as waning stress ruptured the pluton and sodic residual melt bled into the fractured dikes.

The aplite commonly found in veins in the roof zones of granite intrusions is generally considered to develop in the later stages of granite crystallization.
In aggregate, the amount of this material is sufficient to form aplite veins that would match those occurring in the source quarry of the dimension stone at Ballybrew, Co. Wicklow.

Aplite is added to container glass and insulation fiber glass batches for alumina.
Alumina inhibits devitrification and affects the viscosity during glass forming and improves the chemical durability and thermal shock resistance of the finished glass.
Aplite's lower melting point enables the material to disperse easier at the furnace temperatures used in glass making.

Many of the dikes are aplites, pegmatites, or related textural variants, and are mineralogically simple, containing >95% quartz + K-feldspar + plagioclase, with minor biotite, magnetite, titanite, zircon and apatite, and in rare cases, tourmaline, garnet, and secondary epidote and chlorite.
Assuming the aplites were intruded at temperatures lower than or equal to the rocks in which they intruded, it would be expected that Cl/OH would be elevated in the aplitic apatites if the variation in apatite composition was due primarily to a temperature effect.
If we make the assumptions that the aplite composition is representative of the melt from which it was derived, and there is no xenocrystic apatite present in these aplites, the temperature at which apatite begins to crystallize can be calculated (Piccoli and Candela, 1994).

We suggest that these techniques be used to estimate the concentration of HCl and Cl in the vapor in magmatic hydrothermal systems, given melt ASI and/or apatite composition data.
