ROCKZONE.COM: CD Reviews: Turbonegro - Apocalypse Dudes
Apocalypse Dudes starts off in a great way, with the 6 minute opener, "The Age of Pamparius." You won't believe that the song deals with a pizza place, but hey, that's Turbonegro.
Apocalypse Dudes closes on a positive note with the great song "Good Head." Basically, the song deals with a kid who wants, well, you get the point.
Apocalypse Dudes is an excellent album, and while I can't agree that it's one of the best albums ever, it's definitely one worth a listen.

I bought Turbonegro's "Apocalypse Dudes", and it was everything that people said Turbonegro were about--a tight, energetic, vicious rock n' roll band.
As a matter of fact, putting into words what makes "Apocalypse Dudes" so fucking good is almost a futile effort, because it's one of those experiences that is so perfectly executed, that if everyone knew the formula in the first place, they'd be doing it by now anyway.
This is not to say that they didn't have the gay themes on their previous album "Ass Cobra", but on "Dudes", they fully embraced their homoerotic themes, and took it way over the top, as they did in turn with the attitude and sound of the record.

Jello Biafra would later comment that it was one of the best punk albums of the 90s.
Apocalypse Dudes' combination of 70's arena rock, irreverent lyrics, and punk stylings brought the band a level of notoriety that they had not achieved at any other point in their history.
During the next four years, the band members would rarely speak, however the momentum from their previous albums (most especially Ass Cobras and Apocalypse Dudes) would continue to grow as more and more music fans would get turned onto their music.

"Apocalypse Dudes" was both welcome and unexpected, doing double duty by tempering a previously out of control sound, furthering the inescapability of the intellect behind it.
"Apocalypse Dudes" spoke volumes to who this band was, where they wanted to go, and the means they would take to get there regardless of how many minds were littered in the process.
Bottom line is one of Rock's unheralded greats is back on the hog they abruptly hopped off five years before, fully determined to leave a new trail of mud tracks over the back of corporate clones and programmable safe-player types who know nothing of underground appeal, let alone success in longevity.

A swerve away from their masterful ’98 denim-glorifying deathpunk opus Apocalypse Dudes (newly reissued on Epitaph), the new tune neatly summed up the demonic, homoerotic ’80s: Alice’s Prince of Darkness meets Turbo/Ram It Down—era Judas Priest.
An album as glamorous as it is punishing, and as bizarrely alluring as a Dictators/Mercyful Fate double bill set in a gay biker bar, it showed up as an import in 1998 and promptly converted almost everyone who heard it into raving evangelists for the emerging Scandinavian hard-rock underground.
Behind Hank, the rest of Turbonegro were dolled up in their best Dudes finery (we got a darkside Village People: soldier, hayseed, cowboy, cop, sailor) and playing as if they’d never left.

The two new "dudes" that emerged in the band's line-up were Euroboy (Knut Schreiner), a classic rock-inspired lead guitarist, and Chris Summers, the new drummer, who both proved to be essential additions as the band blazed a new punk n' roll path to success.
Coupled with the atmospheric sounds and opening notes of the first track, "The Age of Pamparius," the whispering of the lines, "From the ashes of this golden age of confusion, the denim recruits came to be known as the apocalypse dudes….", a new sound was born.
With Epitaph's recent re-release of Apocalypse Dudes, this CD wouldn't be complete without noting the bonus material including videos of "Get it On" and "Are You Ready (For Some Darkness)" and 2002 Quart Festival footage of "The Age of Pamparius" being thrown in.

Ask not why they are not bigger than they are, rather, astonish at the fact that anyone this side of Northern Europe has a remote clue as to their existence.
So after a well aimed pelvic thrust through most of the '90s that culminated in their finest ("Apocalypse") hour and five year period of self-destruction, they rise again, bigger and better than before and pointing straight at the ear of an ever-growing legion of fans who wouldn't let them die.

Turbonegro's Apocalypse Dudes is, to date, the second greatest rock n' roll record of all time, and after listening to Party Animals, it is clear to me that Turbonegro has gone the way of Axl and Co. Turbonegro are past their prime.
Although Party Animals is certainly no Spaghetti Incident and is in fact, far superior to the highly anticipated and poorly received Scandinavian Leather, it doesn’t hold a candle to Apocalypse Dudes and nothing they do from now on probably ever will.
While Turbonegro's decline mirrors Gn'R almost to a "T," (only on a smaller scale, obviously) their rise to the top couldn't be further from it.

It must be a wake-up call to the rest of the world and an re-introduction to the newly reformed band who blasted on to the Norwegian punk rock scene with their 1992 release, Hot Cars And Spent Contraceptives, coined terms such as "Denim Demons" and "deathpunk", and formed an army of Tubojugend fans.

Although Leather can't compete with the sheer kick ass momentum of Dudes it tries its best with tracks like Drenched In Blood, with it's suprising beach boys sing-along chorus, Turbo Must Be Destroyed, which I think is some sort of mockery of the press and their image and Locked Down.
One of their previous albums, 'Apocalypse Dudes' seemed to me to have far less well-structured songs (although die-hard fans will argue that it is a classic), with 'Get It On' perhaps being their best offering.

When discussing Turbonegro, it's a tough call deciding whether Ass Cobra or Apocalypse Dudes was the band's defining moment.
While Ass had a punishing punk sound that was more in line with the band's earlier releases, Apocalypse's one-two blow of offensive deathpunk and '70s metal riffs could be considered the turning point in the band's career.
My only complaint about the reissue is the glaring lack of bonus tracks to satisfy the band's existing fan base.
