Dystopia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Science fiction, particularly post-apocalyptic science fiction and cyberpunk, often feature dystopias.
In most dystopian works of fiction, a corrupt government creates or sustains the poor quality of life, often conditioning the masses to believe the society is proper and just, even perfect.
Fictional dystopias are frequently written as warnings or as satires, showing current trends extrapolated to a nightmarish conclusion.

Science Fiction Television Encyclopedia Article, Definition, History, Biography
Science fiction is one of the most eclectic and varied of all the genres of fiction.
One of the stalwarts of science fiction television in its early decades was to be the anthology series, in which a completely new story would be presented with each episode, with new actors, settings and situations, the only link being the producers, genre and the series title.
Those programmes do not fit into the most common definition of "science fiction" (speculative fiction principally dealing with the impact of imagined science and technology or both upon society and persons as individuals and are perhaps more comfortably covered under the generic term "telefantasy").

Science fiction Details, Meaning Science fiction Article and Explanation Guide
Soft science fiction is the subgenre where plots and themes tend to focus on philosophy, psychology, politics and sociology while de-emphasizing the details of technological hardware and physical laws.
The European brand of science fiction proper began, however, toward the end of the 19th century with the scientific romances of Jules Verne, whose science was rather on the level of invention, as well as the science-oriented novels of social criticism by H.G. Wells.
Science fiction, generally speaking, is a form of speculative fiction which deals principally with the impact of imagined science and/or technology upon society or individuals.

 Review Articles: November 1995
Her introduction of the term "apocalyptic realism" in order to reclassify the Strugatskys' work is meant, on the one hand, to wrench the Strugatskys from the "frivolous" matrix of sf and to situate them within the Russian mainstream; and on the other hand, to stress the inner coherence of their thematics.
It is characteristic of Apocalyptic Realism that it focuses on the Strugatskys' late work, particularly The Doomed City (1988; though written much earlier) and Burdened with Evil (1988)--the books that veer away from sf in their adoption of an oracular style, oneiric structure, and portentous philosophy of history.
Nor is it difficult to see why apocalyptic theme and imagery should hold a particular attraction for the Russian audience.

Post-Apocalyptic Fiction in Movies and Television: From the Landscape of Fiction
Works of post-apocalyptic fiction and science fiction are simultaneously critiques of contemporary society, disguised depictions of personal development and the mind, and retellings of ancient myths.
Many works of post-apocalyptic fiction depict characters who are trying to escape from false utopias of technology and simulation, which are really prisons that separate them from external nature and their own human nature.
These tables, showing the elements of post-apocalyptic fiction, go with the essay above.

Amazon.com: Books: A Canticle for Leibowitz (Bantam Spectra Book)
Walter Miller's only major novel is not simply a post-apocalyptic science fiction novel but also a multi-layered meditation on the conflict between knowledge and morality.
The first section, entitled Fiat Lux, is a post apocalyptic world that bears a striking resemblence to the middle ages.
A Canticle for Leibowitz is one the few science fiction novels elevated to the status of high literature by the literati, even as they relegate the rest to us hoi polloi.

Logan's Run: Science Fiction and Post-Apocalyptic Fiction 2
The movie took this story and blended it with themes from science fiction and with images from America in the 1970s, to create the rich mythic world of the city that is folded in on itself.
The movie takes these ideas and creates a fictional culture that is a good symbol for the entrapping and delusional qualities of culture (and government) in general, and of our own culture, in particular.
But the essential idea that society's controllers use the instruments of rationality (science, technology, administration, and so on) to trap the public in a closed system full of false satisfactions is essential to both Marcuse and the movie.

New Worlds for Old: The Apocalyptic Imagination, Science Fiction, and American Literatur
To the extent that Ketterer interprets Lem in terms of a phenomenology of knowledge, Solaris is an especially significant instance of science fiction as an epistemological literature: e.g., "science fiction is not primarily valuable as prediction; rather, it teaches an adaptability and elasticity of mind in the face of change" (p25).
I believe this work will generate anew the controversy over the uniqueness and significance of science fiction, the philosophical implications of change, and the role of the religious vision in a secular age.

 Science Fiction Book Reviews
The third novella, "Like Beauty," has the trappings of post-apocalyptic science fiction but is really a mythic fantasy in the peculiarly American mode of The Wizard of Oz and Shane.
Even as the narrative of each novella drives relentlessly forward to its unique and dramatic conclusion, its elements are in constant dialogue with the other stories of the triptych, enriching their meaning and impact and recapitulating structurally the temporal resonances of the fictions themselves.
It is a multitudinous novel of celebration and grieving, of Faulknerian endurance, with the scars of 9/11 at its heart.

Logan's Run: Science Fiction and Post-Apocalyptic Fiction 5
Fiction, like "fact" tries to construct our view of the word, whether it is Disney's fabricated environments telling us that corporate America is a font of progress or Logan's Run giving us messages about the dangers of technology and power.
In effect, it is the role of better forms of fiction to construct fictional versions of the world, which everyone knows are fiction, in order to expose the ways we mistake fiction for reality.
At the same time, we are born psychologically fragile and undeveloped and we are prone to fixation on, and regression to, neurotic behaviors in response to real and imagined dangers that become associated with these normal desires.

 Burgess - Futurama, Autogeddon proposal
Highways, we show, are figured as technological wonders marking the advent of a better future in the 1939 World's Fair and the advertising campaigns of the 1950s, and then as wired-up networks of death in science fictional accounts from the 60s to the 90s.
These stories will be commented on in new video interviews with authors and critics, and placed into cultural context with a discussion of the changing mood of the 1960s and 70s with respect to progress and technological change.
Using extensive archival film footage, digital imagery and original video interviews with authors and cultural critics, we argue that the rhetorical construction of the highway has been haunted, first by narratives of promise and progress and then of decay and death.
