New Wyrd Folk Artists 2004 Article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
However from the emerging UK underground artists who appreciated folk music were starting to emerge, informed by interests in the evolution of society, spiritual development, the gothic and sometimes magical exploration.
This is often called 'folk noir' or even 'fl folk' (especially as many of the musicians were previously involved in the fl metal area of music).
Folk music was still a long way from the mainstream but these first formative developments and a revival of interest in artists such as Nick Drake would sow the seeds for the growth to follow.

However, it cannot be denied that contemporary artists are using the influences of the folk tradition in new ways.
There have been a number of attempts to give this phenomenon a name—"freak-folk," "free-folk," "apocalyptic folk," "experimental Americana," etc. While all of the artists on this playlist live in America, the last term seems inappropriate, because many of these artists are inspired by world folk traditions as well.
And while those who study folk music for a living would probably take exeption to my use of the term "experimental folk," I feel that these artists give a good picture of a trend within contemporary music.

13th Congress of the International Society for Folk Narrative Research - July 2001 - Abstracts
One characteristic of the epoch is a special type of apocalyptic folk narrative.
The source of apocalyptic talk is usually not in the motifs of Christian apocrypha, which are compared with real events in order to presage the coming of the apocalypse, but in the construction of the events themselves as signs of the end of the world.
Thus, the apocalyptic expectations of twentieth-century Russian peasants are mainly connected with processes of acculturation, i.e.

When one can hear all details and the listener is not tired, the dark aspects don’t take him too much down, and the varied arrangements (glockenspiel, flute, acoustic guitars, accordion with some cello, bass percussion,.) work more in a (German) romantic way though with a still slightly dark sense of beauty.

It is rarer still to find an American band that is proficient at crafting the kind of apocalyptic folk, neo-classical, ethno-medieval-goth that would fit in well with World Serpent's roster of bands.
Through the years, they have continuously refined their music to the point of finding a true balance between the tradition of their roots, the contemporarity of their creativity, the intellectual depths of their lyrics and the sensibility of their melodies.

This track, for the most part, is excellent (one thing I've noticed about "apocalyptic folk" artists is their love for overly dramatic band names and album and song titles - go figure).
David Tibet (Current 93 - one of the godfathers of the whole "apocalyptic folk" thing) recites some poetry over a shortwave radio set which seems to revolve around the phrases "A dozen winters of loneliness" and "A dozen summers against the world." DORNENREICH give us an almost acoustic album, with Spanish guitar influences, that instead of the industrial sickness or claustrophobic emptiness that's usually present on the apocalyptic folk releases, we get a thin and very subtle fl metal ferocity and gothic beauty.
