Topic: Apocalypticism

  Apocalypticism and Modern Thinking
Here, apocalypticism is profoundly historical, just as it was in the time of Jesus, but now incarnate historically as it never was in the ancient world.
Now even as ancient Jewish apocalypticism profoundly challenged the orthodox guardians of the Torah, a challenge which is profoundly renewed in Paul, modern apocalypticism profoundly challenges Christian orthodoxy.
And there is good reason for this, apocalypticism is inevitably subversive, and perhaps the most purely subversive force in history, all of the great political revolutions in modernity have been apocalyptic revolutions, and even the advent of both Christianity and Islam can be understood as the consequence of apocalypticism.

Apocalypticism, the belief if not outright desire for the end of the world in a dramatic and violent way, has existed in every culture because suffering and the desire to end suffering is universal.
Apocalypticism as a tumultuous cleansing of perceived evil is, however, a violent projection of the self and the group, and wishes vengeance and havoc on a world already suffering.
Apocalypticism is a special temptation to the would-be hermit and solitary because it justifies the life style of aloneness and aloofness, presenting itself as a cure for alienation and despondency.

Finally, apocalypticism construes reality in strong dualistic terms, between this world and the coming one, between good and evil, between the sons of light and the sons of darkness (compare 1 QS 4:1, Community Rule from the Qumran writings).
Apocalypticism is not confined to the apocalyptic genre, but may be found in any literature and can entail any or all of the above characteristics.
Both preterism and futurism (as well as overt demythologization of apocalypticism) are perhaps unconscious (or maybe conscious) attempts to avoid the repeated embarrassment of having to locate one’s community at the end of the prophetic timeline and finding out that it was wrong.

On the one hand, to focus on religious apocalypticism is not to dispute the broader significance of analogous secular forms, such as nuclear or environmental catastrophe scenarios that have received substantial attention of late (e.g., Barkun 19go; Lamy 1992); it is merely to delimit the argument.
Apocalypticism is a radical form of organization that is most likely to be elected by groups in social locations experiencing crisis.

Eddy’s apocalypticism is progressive in that she envisioned a process—not unlike the apostle Paul’s call for the development of a celestial body—by which human beings would become more spiritual and finally attain “at-one-ment” with God, in Christian Science, the perfect, eternal reflection of a perfect Divine Being.

Goergen - Mission and Ministry: Chapter 6
In assessing the influence of apocalypticism on Jesus, the most challenging task is to determine what Jesus meant when he referred to "the human one" or "the son of humanity" (the "son of man").
It was apocalypticized into a way of describing the future hope which was attached to Jesus after his resurrection from the dead.
He rejects the assumption that there existed in pre-Christian Judaism a conception of a transcendent, apocalyptic "son of humanity." Rather, in Jewish apocalypticism there is simply the use of the imagery of Daniel 7:13 by subsequent seers who use it independently of each other (e.g., the Christian use, 1 Enoch, 4 Ezra).

A very important part of Satan’s identity within Christianity is the notion that Satan is the chief angel among a group that rebelled against God and fell from their original position in the heavenly realm.
The most important distinction between these “satans”; (including the one in Job), “messengers”, or “evil spirits” and the evil Satan figure of later apocalypticism is that the Hebrew Bible’s satans and angels are almost always acting in conjunction with the will of Yahweh, or God.
As you are aware, there has been somewhat of a renaissance of the rapture notion in its American fundamentalist form with the extremely popular novels by Tim LaHaye (especially leading up to and since the turn of the millenium).

SUNY Press :: AIDS and American Apocalypticism
Christian fundamentalists had already configured the gay male population most visibly affected by AIDS as apocalyptic signifiers or signs of the "end times." Their discourse grew out of a centuries-old American apocalypticism that included images of crisis, destruction, and ultimate renewal.
In this book, Thomas L. Long examines the ways in which gay and AIDS activists, artists, writers, scientists, and journalists appropriated this apocalyptic rhetoric in order to mobilize attention to the medical crisis, prevent the spread of the disease, and treat the HIV infected.
Using the analytical tools of literary analysis, cultural studies, performance theory, and social semiotics, AIDS and American Apocalypticism examines many kinds of discourse, including fiction, drama, performance art, demonstration graphics and brochures, biomedical publications, and journalism and shows that, while initially useful, the effects of apocalyptic rhetoric in the long term are dangerous.
