Topic: Apocopation

  Reference.com/Encyclopedia/Apocope
An apocope or apocopation is a type of metaplasm that refers to a word formed by removing the end of a longer original word.
The word apocopation is derived from the Greek apokoptein (from apo (away (from)) and koptein (to cut)).
In many languages, apocopation is also used to form shorter synonyms of a word, which becomes a sort of spoken abbreviation the word.

The final root he, ערה, is apocopated as a waw-consecutive.
The initial asyndetic verb may be considered a jussive, or volitional modality; however morphologically one would expect apocopation of the final he, אַל־תַּעַשֹ, as in the negative forms (Genesis 22:12; Jeremiah 39:12; Job 13:20).

As for the distribution of WEYIQTOLs, I would hypothesise that the apocopated ones are either jussive or cohortative in meaning or corrupted WAYYIQTOLs, and again test that hypothesis against the context.
I note that adding the additional he to an apocopated lamed he verb is, at least in an unpointed text, equivalent to reversing the apocopation.
Thus the distribution of apocopation in WEYIQTOL forms broadly matches that of jussives and cohortatives and perhaps suggests that around 90% of WEYIQTOLs are basically vav + jussive/cohortative, with the remaining ones being vav + regular YIQTOL; and that many of the non-apocopated 1st person WAYYIQTOLs in fact have the cohortative additional he.

The apocopation cannot be purely phonological, because both apocopated and non-apocopated forms occur without that WAY- prefix, in phonologically similar environments.
