The Apocynaceae or dogbane family is a family of flowering plants, including trees, shrubs, herbs, or lianas.
The former two sub-families were part of the Apocynaceae sensu stricto, whilst the latter three sub-families used to belong to the Asclepiadaceae.

Pachypodium - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pachypodium is a plant genus that belongs to the dogbane family, Apocynaceae.
The family Apocynaceae before it included Asclepiadaceae had 3 genera that can be considered succulent plants: Adenium, Pachypodium, and Plumeria.
However, a study of key characteristics of the taxon and a cladistic study of the subfamily Apocynoideae and the family Asclepiadaceae (before its merging with the Apocynaceae), demonstrates that this closed association is not warranted.

The Asclepiadaceae, as traditionally defined, have repeatedly been shown to be an apomorphic derivative of the Apocynaceae.
It has often been recommended that the Asciepiadaceae be subsumed within the Apocynaceae in order to make the latter monophyletic.
Here we provide a unified classification for the Apocynaceae, which consists of 424 genera distributed among five subfamilies: Rauvolfioideae, Apocynoideae, Periplocoideae, Secamonoideae, and Asclepiadoideae.
