Swift   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
They are superficially similar to swallows but are completely unrelated to those passerine species, since swifts are in the separate order Apodiformes, which they formerly shared with the hummingbirds.
The resemblances between the groups are due to convergent evolution reflecting similar life styles based on catching insects in flight.
The nest is glued to a vertical surface with saliva, and the genus Aerodramus use only that substance, which is the basis for bird's nest soup.

 Apodiformes
Traditionally the bird order Apodiformes contained three families: the swifts, Apodidae, the tree swifts Hemiprocnidae, and the hummingbirds Trochilidae.
In the Sibley-Ahlquist taxonomy, hummingbirds are separated from the Apodiformes as a new order Trochiliformes.

Auk, The: Phylogeny of early tertiary swifts and hummingbirds (Aves: Apodiformes)
The "Jungornithidae" sensu Karhu (1999) are shown to be paraphyletic with the Upper Eocene Argornis being the sister taxon of the taxon (Jungornis + extant Trochilidae).
An Argornis-like apodiform bird from the Middle Eocene of Messel shows a completely unexpected combination of a greatly abbreviated, apodiform humerus with a short and broad wing, and might indicate that the Trochilidae evolved from a short-winged ancestor.
As already noted by Karhu (1999), the fossil record of apodiform birds is in agreement with monophyly of swifts and hummingbirds.

 ADW: Trochilidae: Information
Hummingbirds belong to the order Apodiformes, meaning, "unfooted birds." There are three families in this order: Trochilidae (hummingbirds), Hemiprocnidae (tree swifts), and Apodidae (swifts).
When classified using anatomical and morphological characteristics, hummingbirds are generally placed in the order Apodiformes along with tree swifts (Hemiprocnidae) and true swifts (Apodidae).
As the name of their order, Apodiformes (“unfooted birds”) suggests, hummingbirds have characteristically small feet.

SICB - 2004 meeting - Abstract Details   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
These findings suggest it is a widespread trait within the family Trochilidae (Apodiformes), and underscore the potential importance of this feature in the context of insectivory in hummingbirds.
A survey of the literature reveals that members of other closely-related families, the swifts (Apodidae: Apodiformes) and nighthawks (Caprimulgidae: Caprimulgiformes), also use some form of mandibular kinesis for the purpose of aerial insectivory.
As such they represent a potentially informative reversal in an avian trend toward fusion of elements of the jaws and skull for stability and weight reduction, and our footage of hummingbird foraging may provide valuable insight into the application of this feature for insectivorous foraging.
