Apogee Software - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Apogee Software, Ltd. is a video game publisher and developer, established in 1987.
Apogee's commercial success led to the wide spread adoption of the shareware model by other major publishers such as Capstone, Parallax Software, id Software, Activision, and Epic Megagames, and also led to a growth of Software Creations BBS, which would become the largest BBS in North America.
Apogee started in 1987 with the release of Scott Miller's Kingdom of Kroz, which used crude extended ASCII characters as graphics.

Id Software - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Once Apogee Software learned of the group and their exceptional talent, they recruited them, and developed the necessary titles for them to get out of their Softdisk contracts.
The lead programmer for id Software is John Carmack, whose skill at 3D programming is widely recognized in the software industry.
Tom Hall left id Software during the early days of Doom development (but not before he had some impact: he was responsible, for example, for the inclusion of teleporters in the game).

Instead of publishing every game under Apogee as it had been in the past, the goal of this strategy was to create a spin-off brand for each type of game genre, making each new game identifyable based on which brand it belonged to.
However many of those varied genres such as pinball, platform, or scrolling-shooter (that were much of Apogee's early releases) were slowly dying out in the late 1990s making this strategy unecessary in the end.
Since all of Apogee's released games since 1998 have been using a 3D engine (even if the gameplay is 2D, like Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project), 3D Realms has in effect replace Apogee as the brand name to publish games under.

 Trivia for Apogee Software, Ltd.
With the release of Rise of the Triad, Apogee had another major industry first: A parental lock-out feature that parents could use to password protect the game, preventing their children experiencing much of the game's violence and all of the gore.
Apogee was the first PC games developer to hide cheat modes within games, such as Kingdom of Kroz.
Known in the shareware industry as the "Apogee model," their breakthrough method of releasing a portion of a full game (an "episode") as shareware (years before the Internet became popular) was risky and innovative, and done well before other PC game publishers released demos of their games -- now standard practice.

Shareware   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Shareware is software that is distributed without payment ahead of time as is common for proprietary software.
Usually shareware differs from open source software in that requests of voluntary "shareware fees" are made, often within the program itself, and in that source code for shareware programs is generally not available in a form that would allow others to extend the program.
In some cases, unpaid use of the software is limited in time—in which case the software is vernacularly called crippleware.

In 1996, FormGen was bought out by GT Software, and as such, Apogee was left with only what stock we had at the time of the game.
This is a product that contained every single game that ID Software ever made, as well as some others that were made by id people for other companies like Softdisk.
The main reason for this is that ID Software owns the rights to Commander Keen, and any new project would have to be either done by them directly (EXTREMELY unlikely), or at least approved by them.
