  Apollonius Rhodius - Wikipedia

Apollonius of Rhodes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Apollonius of Rhodes (Apollonius Rhodius), librarian at Alexandria, was a poet, the author of Argonautica, a literary epic retelling of ancient material concerning Jason and the Argonauts' quest for the Golden Fleece in the mythic land of Colchis.
Born at Alexandria, perhaps about 270 BC, Apollonius was a pupil of Callimachus.
Epic unity escaped Apollonius, and his epic in four books resolves into a string of well-told episodes, the most memorable being the love story of Jason and Medea in Book III.

The birth of Apollonius Rhodius is placed by scholars at various times between 296 and 260 B.C., while the year of his death is equally uncertain.
Callimachus attacks Apollonius in the passage at the end of the "Hymn to Apollo", already mentioned, also probably in some epigrams, but most of all in his "Ibis", of which we have an imitation, or perhaps nearly a translation, in Ovid's poem of the same name.
Apollonius seems to have carefully studied Homeric glosses, and gives many examples of isolated uses, but his choice of words is by no means limited to Homer.

 Bryn Mawr Classical Review 2001.11.13
Although the conclusions that Apollonius was among the foremost Homeric scholars of his time and that Apollonius' use of his scholarship in the Argonautica is an essentially Callimachean technique may not be surprising, Rengakos' care and thoroughness in concretely establishing Apollonius' intellectual context are to be appreciated.
In her paper, "Apollonius as a Hellenistic Geographer," Doris Meyer considers the physical organization of Apollonius' narrative in relation to the habits of thought of Hellenistic geographers.
In the penultimate contribution, "Echoes and Imitations of Apollonius Rhodius in Late Greek Epic," Francis Vian considers the evidence for the familiarty with the Argonautica of Quintus Smyrnaeus, Triphiodorus, and Nonnus of Panopolis.

But a poet like Apollonius demands more and Campbell obliges, especially in two important areas: Apollonius' propensity to allude to earlier and contemporary writers and to compress the narrative.
In sum, what among many things differentiates Jason from Odysseus is that the Hellenistic hero is clueless when he faces his great heroic achievement and only succeeds through the drugs and magic incantations provided by Medea, a seemingly all-powerful Nausicaa, whose role she clearly plays in Book 3.
Apollonius had the theft in mind in his elaborate description of the first launch of the Argo, headed, like the impish god, on a distant expedition to fetch an item (the fleece of an animal instead of the animal itself) that is supposed to earn the new possessor a kingdom/flock (1.362-393; in particular, Argo.

These traits are more prominent in Callimachus than in Apollonius, but they are certainly to be seen in the latter.
(4) The subject of love had been treated in the romantic spirit before the time of Apollonius in writings that have perished, for instance, in those of Antimachus of Colophon, but the "Argonautica" is perhaps the first poem still extant in which the expression of this spirit is developed with elaboration.

The learning of Apollonius is not deep but it is curious, and his general sentiments are simple and obvious.

Yet Apollodorus also suggests [2.6.3] that the voyage of the ARGONAUTS and the hunt of the Calydonian boar took place while Theseus was on his way to Athens from Troezen, clearing the Isthmus of malefactors.
Yet the circumstances of his death are reported only by Apollonius Rhodius, although Mopsus 1 appears in several other lists of ARGONAUTS (Argonautica Orphica, Valerius Flaccus, and Hyginus).
It appears that if someone wished to accommodate Apollonius Rhodius' view of Theseus' position in time, he would have to drastically rearrange or eliminate several tales.

 A Companion to Apollonius Rhodius
This volume on Apollonius of Rhodes, whose Argonautica is the sole full-length epic to survive from the Hellenistic period, comprises articles by fourteen leading scholars from Europe and America.
Their contributions cover a wide range of issues from the history of the text and the problems of the poet's biography through questions of style, literary technique and intertextual relations to the epic's literary and cultural reception.
The aim is to give an up-to-date outline of the scholarly discussion in these areas and to provide a survey of recent and current trends in Apollonian studies which will be useful to students of Hellenistic poetry in general as well as to scholars with a specialised interest in Apollonius.

This paper will explore how Apollonius Rhodes (hereafter AR) repeatedly recounts Polyphemus’ death in Mysia in order to amplify a minor character’s role within his narrative to serve a larger narrative and poetic agenda.
I will describe the role “fate” plays within these vignettes as a rhetorical device authorizing a particular version of a mythological tradition and so as an ironically becomes a means of asserting individual poetic authority under the guise of narrative determinism.
