	Apologia Pro Vita Sua - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Apologia Pro Vita Sua (Latin, "A defence of one's life") is the classic defence of the religious opinions of John Henry Newman, published in 1864 in response to what he saw as an unwarranted attack on Roman Catholic doctrine by Charles Kingsley.
		Kingsley had strongly suggested that Newman was representative of a line of Roman Catholic theologians who had distorted the truth, writing in Macmillan's Magazine "Truth, for its own sake had never been a virtue with the Roman clergy.
		After a brief and unsatisfactory correspondence in which Newman asked Kingsley to point out exactly where he was alleged to have held such an opinion, Newman began work on the Apologia.

		A cognate term appears in Paul's letter to the Philippians as he is "defending the gospel" (1:7 and 17), and in 1 Peter 3:15 believers must be ready to give an "answer" for their faith.
		In the English language, the word apology is derived from the Greek word "apologia", but its use has changed; its primary sense now refers to a defensive plea for forgiveness for an action that is open to blame.

		I'd recommend the Norton Critical Edition over the Penguin edition, obviously, not for the "translation," but for the criticism that helps put the issues involved in context for the 20th century reader.
