Apologia Pro Vita Sua - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Apologia Pro Vita Sua (Latin, "A defence of one's life") is the classic defence of the religious opinions of John Henry Newman, published in 1864 in response to what he saw as an unwarranted attack on Roman Catholic doctrine by Charles Kingsley.
Kingsley had strongly suggested that Newman was representative of a line of Roman Catholic theologians who had distorted the truth, writing in Macmillan's Magazine "Truth, for its own sake had never been a virtue with the Roman clergy.
After a brief and unsatisfactory correspondence in which Newman asked Kingsley to point out exactly where he was alleged to have held such an opinion, Newman began work on the Apologia.

§11. Newman’s "Apologia pro vita sua". XII. The Oxford Movement. Vol. 12. The Romantic Revival. The Cambridge ...
His Apologia pro vita sua was written in 1864 in answer to an offensive and unprovoked slander from Charles Kingsley.
From the day when his Apologia was published, Newman won a place in the heart of his countrymen of whatever religion or whatever politics, which he never lost till he passed away nearly fifty years later in an honoured old age.
Thus, then, when the English of his Apologia is recommended as a model, and as characteristic of its age and the tractarian movement, it must be remembered that its simplicity is largely the result of a long and strenuous mental discipline acting upon a singularly brilliant and sensitive spirit.

Apologetics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
When John Henry Newman entitled his spiritual autobiography Apologia Pro Vita Sua in 1864, he was playing upon both connotations.
A cognate term appears in Paul's letter to the Philippians as he is "defending the gospel" (1:7 and 17), and in 1 Peter 3:15 believers must be ready to give an "answer" for their faith.
In the English language, the word apology is derived from the Greek word "apologia", but its use has changed; its primary sense now refers to a defensive plea for forgiveness for an action that is open to blame.

Framing his Apologia in reply to a grave and gratuitous slander made by Charles Kingsley, Newman produced one of the masterpieces of spiritual writing: honest, passionate, scrupulous and moving, this work is also a highly accomplished prose paradigm.
There are few autobiographies as moving and eloquent as Newman's "Apologia." This is his "defense" of his life's choice to leave the Church of England and "go home to Rome." It's a moving testament to an individual's struggle with spiritual issues and theological dogmas and how they inform our lives.
"Apologia Pro Vita Sua" is John Henry Cardinal Newman's explanation of his religious views and actions from 1833 to the time of his writing in 1864.

 Apologia for Priests
They were to honor one of their own number, John Henry Newman, who had just completed his Apologia Pro Vita Sua.
The Apologia, then, represented no just "a history of his religious opinions," but simultaneously an intellectual defense of the integrity of Catholicism and, in particular, of the Catholic priesthood.
Newman’s vindication in the Apologia of his own life and conversion was, simultaneously, a vindication of all priests, their lives, their vocations, their more or less successful attempts to be true to a great mission.

Cardinal Newman documents his conversion in Apologia Pro Vita Sua, where he presents his quest for authority and his religious convictions.
In retrospect it is evident that John Henry Cardinal Newman’s justification for his conversion is twofold, his representation of the Biblical allusion with Moses of Exodus and his clever use of Anglican Church doctrines to support his points while they discredit and attacker.
Perhaps the best way to conclude this excursion into the third chapter of Apologia Pro Vita Sua is to end with a portion of a prayer by Cardinal Newman, he wrote, “GOD HAS CREATED ME, to do him some definite service.

The Blog from the Core - Apologia Pro Vita Sua
One hundred and forty years ago today — Thursday, June 16, 1864 —; the last serial portion of one of the great literary phenomena of the 19th century was published: the Appendix to John Henry Newman's monumental Apologia Pro Vita Sua.
Indeed, the last portion of the Apologia proper had been published two weeks earlier, June 2, 1864, the writing of it having been completed on May 26.
Fortunately, the Appendix was a key portion of the original version, without which we would have been deprived of one of the most cutting sentences in all of "controversial" literature:

Having inspired and led the Oxford or Tractarian Movement before he abandoned Anglicanism for the Church of Rome, Newman regularly found himself the target of virulent anti-Catholic prejudice in Vioctorian England.
The Apologia was his autobiographical response to a public attack by the novelist Charles Kingsley on his personal integrity.
With it he not only convinced a suspicious public of the sincerity of his beliefs, but he also produced a literary masterpiece.

Modern History Sourcebook: John Henry Newman: Apologia Pro Vita
A classic from the day it was completed, the Apologia will ever be the chief authority for Newman's early thoughts, and for his judgment on the great religious revival known as the Oxford Movement, of which he was the guide, the philosopher, and the martyr….
The answer came in the shape of an Apologia pro Vita Sua, which, while pulverizing enemies of the Kingsley stamp, lifted Newman to a height above all his detractors, and added a unique specimen of religious autobiography to our language.
Newman's controversy with Kingsley provoked the composition of the Apologia, but the work proved to be, as Newman soon understood, a much more significant work than a simple piece of apologetic.

What is Newman's view of the "living busy world" in which he lived, both as described in the excerpt from chapter 5 of the Apologia and in his description of Liberalism?
Newman wrote the Apologia to defend himself, and the Catholic Church, from charges that he and it endorsed the suppression of the reason.

Reviewer: Jim Gallen (see more about me) from St. Louis, Missouri, U. "Apologia Pro Vita Sua" is John Henry Cardinal Newman's explanation of his religious views and actions from 1833 to the time of his writing in 1864.
After publication, Newman's Apologia helped raise the esteem of Catholics in the eyes of the English people and helped make him a Cardinal.
I'd recommend the Norton Critical Edition over the Penguin edition, obviously, not for the "translation," but for the criticism that helps put the issues involved in context for the 20th century reader.
