The Art of the Apology - HBS Working Knowledge
Apologies involve three elements: Acknowledgment of a fault or an offense, regret for it, and responsibility for the offense.
A good apology should make the person wronged think, "Yes, she understands." Often what the offended person wants is accountability and vigilance; he wants to know that it won't happen again.
For someone who equates an apology with loss of stature, for instance, the person-to-person apology can appear to be a magnanimous act that does not diminish her.

It should be noted that the Apology is not a "dialogue" in the strict sense, in the manner of Plato's other dialogues.
In the Apology, Socrates asserts (dialectically) that death is either an eternal dreamless sleep (and therefore a welcome rest) or it is an exit to an afterlife in pleasant communion with the gods.
In the Apology, Socrates claims to be ignorant of "life after death." But he does "know" that it is pernicious to corrupt one's soul by committing injustice.

 Plato's Apology
Plato's Apology is in the widest sense an example of forensic oratory, in which Socrates defends himself in court against his accusers.
Finally, it should be noted that the Apology is a set of speeches recreated by a second party after the fact (like the speeches in Thucydides), and therefore should not be considered a word-for-word reproduction of what Socrates said on that occasion.
Plato's Apology presents to us a speech delivered by Socrates in his own defense at his trial in the first person throughout.

The Apology of Socrates is one of the earliest existing documents of Greek philosophy - everything earlier was lost and is known only through quoted fragments in later works, like those of Plato himself.
Rightly so, the Apology is still, all by itself, an excellent introduction to Western philosophy and traditionally the first complete text read in the formal study of Classical Greek.
Plato, who’s presence at the trial is mentioned twice in the Apology, provides us with the only witnessed recording of the trial proceedings and the historic Apology of Socrates.

 Plato's Apology
The Apology is also an important example of a fairly extensive literature designed to defend Socrates against his detractors and to present what his defenders believed to be the real Socrates.
The use of the word "Apology" in this context is based on the meaning of the Greek word apologia which does not mean `a statement of regret requesting pardon', but 'a formal statement of justification or defense'.
In addition to the apologies of Plato and Xenophon, Socrates appears in almost all of Plato's Dialogues and in Xenophon's Recollections [of Socrates] and in two works by these authors which both have the title Symposium 'Drinking Party'.

 Apology Comments 1
The event recorded in the Apology is very likely the event which is the seed from which the Platonic corpus was to grow and so the seed from which Western Philosophy was to grow as well.
Indeed, the Apology is not really a Platonic dialogue at all (in the usual sense) but rather a combination of Socratic autobiography and impassioned self-defense of Socrates' way of life.
The Apology begins with what appear to be Socrates' opening remarks to defend himself against the charges of impiety and corrupting the youth before his fellow Athenians in an Athenian court.

 SparkNotes: The Apology: Summary
Plato's The Apology is an account of the speech Socrates makes at the trial in which he is charged with not recognizing the gods recognized by the state, inventing new deities, and corrupting the youth of Athens.
Thus, in The Apology, Socrates attempts to defend himself and his conduct--certainly not to apologize for it.
This is the only instance in The Apology of the elenchus, or cross-examination, which is so central to most Platonic dialogues.

Commentary on the Apology of Socrates
This is probably the least honest part of the Apology and perhaps might be considered evidence for the authenticity of Plato's rendition, since he might otherwise have been at pains to fix up the argument and address the real issue, treason, and not beat a straw man, as Socrates does.
In the Apology one peculiarity is that, even as Socrates tries to get Meletus to admit that he would not knowingly do wrong, Socrates never concedes to his accusers the benefit of this principle.
In fact, it does not become an issue in the Apology, since his accusers think that he is an atheist and are probably unaware that his criticism of their religion is more moralistic than atheistic.

Socrates is of the school of thought that citizens are under a prima facie obligation to obey the law regardless on their stand about how unjust the law might be.
In the Apology, Socrates leans on the notion that confronted with a law one profoundly disagrees with, one can set aside the general obligation to obey and disobey.
While I did not agree with Socrates in The Apology, I could understand and respect his preceived duty to obey the law, but as he began to philosophize about the soul and its properties it seemed that he was building his elaborate castle on shifting ground.

 Socrates Apology
But as both these accusations must have been obviously false to an unprejudiced tribunal, the accusers relied for the success of their cause on perjured witnesses, and the envy of the judges, whose ignorance would readily yield to misrepresentation, and be influenced and guided by false eloquence and fraudulent arts.
For to such a one it will most clearly appear from this very Apology, that Socrates was accused of impiety for asserting that he was connected in a very transcendant degree with a presiding daemon, to whose direction he confidently submitted the conduct of his life.
Besides, in the course of this Apology he asserts, in the most unequivocal and solemn manner, his belief in polytheism; and this is indubitably confirmed in many places by Plato, the most genuine of his disciples, and the most faithful recorder of his doctrines.

Bush, the others — for warnings unheeded five years ago, for war unjustified four years ago, for battle unprepared three years ago — they are not weighted with the urgency and necessity of this one.

Tertullian : T.H. BINDLEY, The Apology of Tertullian (1890)
That he was also well versed in the art of rhetoric, the reader of the APOLOGY will at once admit: the arguments are accumulated with the skill, and sometimes with the one-sidedness, of an advocate holding a brief in his own case, and pleading with an impassioned earnestness born of deep personal conviction.
The APOLOGY was written in the year 197, very soon after his conversion, and the reader may, happily, forget the subsequent lapse of its author into heresy.
The immediate purpose of the APOLOGY was to protest against the wholesale condemnation of a body of men on the mere presumption of a criminality which had never been proved.

The U.S. government may be preparing to offer a formal apology for using fl men to study syphilis in Tuskegee, Ala., conducted between 1932 and 1972, said Dr. David Satcher, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
