 Two new species discovered
After learning about the Fieldiana manuscript, Thomas Arndt, publisher of the German bird magazine Papageien, made a trip to Camiguin to look for these birds.
The new mammal is a Philippine forest mouse, now identified as Apomys camiguinensis.
It has large ears and eyes, a long tail and rusty-brown fur, and it feeds mostly on insects and seeds.

Throughout this period, the morphological boundaries of the group remained vague, the diagnosis nonexistent, and the contents nebulous.

The Manila Times Internet Edition | WEEKEND > Zambales surprises   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
The small-bodied forest mice could well be representatives of the endemic Apomys musculus and Apomys microdon, though they are relatively smaller than previous specimens of these two species we documented from several mountains on Luzon.
The large-bodied Apomys, on the other hand, was very different from the ones we recorded at our lower study sites (in 2004), or anywhere from Luzon that we’ve so far seen or examined.
However, the group of large-bodied Apomys is widespread and common on Luzon and we need to study them in detail to determine if what we caught on Mount Tapulao is a unique species to Zambales.

The new species, found only on the volcanic island some 700 kilometers (434 miles) south of Manila, will be officially unveiled in the latest issue of Fieldiana: Zoology, the scientific journal of the Chicago-based Field Museum of Natural History, said Filipino researcher Blas Tabranza.
Tabranza, who was with the Mindanao State University at the time of the expedition, said that the parrot, known as the Camiguin Hanging Parrot or Loriculus camiguinensis and the mouse, known as Apomys camiguinensis, were first found in a field study of the area conducted from 1994-1995.
It was only years later, after samples of these newly-discovered animals were compared to known species that the Field Museum concluded that they were so far unknown, said Tabranza, who has since left the state university to join the local environmental group Haribon Foundation.

Welcome surprises from Mt. Banahaw | Haribon
For the next two weeks, we sought the small mammals that live on the ground and in the trees in the montane forest that cloaks the mountain at that elevation, and still higher at 1750 meters, where the steep terrain and cold, wet weather have caused the forest to be left mostly untouched.
Much to our delight, we found forest mice (the genus Apomys) to be abundant, with one large, short-tailed species on the ground, and one long-tailed species in the trees.
The large one seems to be somewhat different from those we have studied elsewhere, and we will study our voucher specimens carefully during the coming year to determine if they represent a distinct I species.

The primary focus of current research in my lab is molecular systematics of various diverse rodent groups.
These include the families Sciuridae (squirrels), Muridae (mice, rates, hamsters, and relatives), subfamily Sigmodontinae (Neotropical mice and rats), and several genera within these groups, such as Apomys, Marmota, and Phyllotis.
In collaboration with Larry Heaney (Field Museum of Natural History) we are producing a molecular phylogeny for the genus using cyt b (Steppan et al.

Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro - Ellorin: Thinking and reflecting on creation this Lent
That somewhere in Mount Timpoong in Camiguin, a mouse that can only be found in Camiguin is running around hunting insects.
The hanging parrot eventually got the scientific name L. camiguinensis and the rusty-brown, big-eyed, large-eared and long-tailed rodent has a scientific name Apomys camiguinensis.
The authors of the scientific journal Fieldiana: Zoology April 5, 2006 issue Lawrence Heaney underscores the need to conserve the bio-diversity of Camiguin.
