Council of Jerusalem - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Council of Jerusalem" is a name applied in retrospect to a meeting described in Acts of the Apostles chapter 15.
Though it doesn't mention a council, its title strongly suggests it is meant to represent the decree of that council.
Related to the Didache are the texts: Epistle of Barnabas, Apostolic Constitutions, Didascalia Apostolorum [1], Apostolic Church Ordinances [2], Summary of Doctrine, Life of Schnudi and On the Teaching of the Apostles (or Doctrina).

 Council of Vienne 1311-1312 A.D.
The general council of Vienne was summoned by pope Clement V with the bull Regnans in caelis, which he had written on 12 August 1308 at Poitiers (the Roman pontiff had remained in France from the year of his election, thus beginning the period of the church's history known as the Avignon captivity).
The council of Vienne is seen as an outstanding example of this political pressure, although the pope energetically defended the liberty of the church as far as circumstances allowed and he himself had the power.
Moreover, with the approval of the said council, we reject as erroneous and contrary to the truth of the catholic faith every doctrine or proposition rashly asserting that the substance of the rational or intellectual soul is not of itself and essentially the form of the human body, or casting doubt on this matter.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Plenary Council
Later usage has restricted the term plenary to those councils which are presided over by a delegate of the Apostolic See, who has received special power for that purpose, and which are attended by all the metropolitans and bishops of some commonwealth, empire, or kingdom, or by their duly accredited representatives.
Synods of a somewhat similar nature (though approaching nearer to the idea of a general council) were the Council of Arles in Gaul in 314 (at which were present the Bishops of London, York, and Caerleon), and the Council of Sardica in 343 (whose canons were frequently cited as Nicene canons).
Thus, the Councils of Milevis and Carthage condemned Pelagianism, and the Council of Orange (Arausicanum) Semipelagianism.

 Vatican II and Parish Councils
The "apostolic" function (including the "coordination" of lay initiatives) was assigned, in the "Decree on the Church's Missionary Activity," to pastoral councils.[ #22 ] Moreover, at least one later Vatican document failed to maintain the pastoral/apostolic distinction.
He states that the earliest parish councils, who based themselves on the "apostolic" council idea of Laity 26, were not pastoral enough.[ #26 ] In his mind, it is consistent with the intention of Vatican II to apply the ideas of both Laity 26 and Bishops 27 to parish pastoral councils.
Parish councils, they said, were insufficiently pastoral, preoccupied with decision-making, jealous of their power to dictate policy and programs, unfocused on the development of the parish mission, and concerned more about coordinating existing efforts than about planning for the future.[ #35 ] The five did not like what they saw.

 APOSTOLIC CONSTITUTION
The Council is convened by the cardinal secretary of state, usually twice a year, to consider those economic and organizational questions which relate to the administration of the Holy See, with the assistance, as needed, of experts in these affairs.
The Council is to urge and support laypeople to participate in the life and mission of the Church in their own way, as individuals or in associations, especially so that they may carry out their special responsibility of filling the temporal order with the spirit of the Gospel.
With special solicitude the Council looks to Catholic newspapers and periodicals, as well as radio and television stations, that they may truly live up to their nature and function, by transmitting especially the teaching of the Church as it is laid out by the Church’s magisterium, and by spreading religious news accurately and faithfully.

Decrees of the First Vatican Council
This council was summoned by Pope Pius IX by the bull Aeterni Patris of 29 June 1868.
The purpose of the council was, besides the condemnation of contemporary errors, to define the catholic doctrine concerning the church of Christ.
As in other councils at which the pope was present and presided, the decrees were in the form of bulls, at the end of which was the clear declaration: "with the approval of the sacred council".

The Apostolic Council is recounted in the Biblical New Testament book of Acts, chapter 15, and by Paul in his letters to the Galatians and the Colossians ; the account in Acts and Pauls own report are from fairly different angles.
Acts states that Paul was the head of a delegation from the Antiochene church that came to discuss whether Christians should continue to observe Mosaic Law, most important of which were the practice of circumcision and dietary laws.
Despite the agreement they achieved at the Apostolic Council, Paul recounts how when he met Peter in Antioch not long after their meeting in Jerusalem, he berated that apostle over his reluctance to share a meal with gentile Christians (Gal.

The Second Vatican Ecumenical Council - Dedicated to "The Immaculate".
Long before the Council began, the bishops of the Catholic world were asked to submit their proposals for subjects to be raised in the Council sessions.
The Council drew attention to the age-old tradition of sacred music and singing, closely linked to the liturgy; and the Constitution declares that worship becomes more noble when it is carried out with solemn singing, especially when the celebrant, ministers and people take an active part.
The Council Fathers decided to submit this question to the Pope for a ruling, and expressed the hope that this ruling would be given in advance of the promulgation of the reform in Canon Law.

Nevertheless, though a venerable mirror of ancient Christian life and blameless in doctrine, their claim to genuine Apostolic origin is quite false and untenable.
Hincmar of Reims (died 882) declared that they were not written by the Apostles, and as late as the middle of the eleventh century, Western theologians (Cardinal Humbert, 1054) distinguished between the eighty-five Greek canons that they declared apocryphal, and the fifty Latin canons recognized as "orthodox rules" by antiquity.
The influence of the Apostolic Canons was greatly increased by the various versions of them soon current in the Christian Church, East and West.

The apostolic council was divided into Peter's speech (15:7-12), James's proposed solution (15:13-21) and the apostles' "unanimous" decision, which Judas Barsabbas and Silas delivered in writing to the Gentile Christian churches (15:23-29).

I find that one of the most difficult tasks of a minister is teaching the people just what discipleship is. Beyond the favourite scriptural quotations, which can become clichés if not filled with substance, most new Christians have little idea what discipleship is and, if honest, have little desire to enter fully into its spirit.
