It is located in downtown Athens, east of the National Gardens and the Zappeion Mansion, west of the Pankrati residential district and between the twin pine-covered hills of Ardettos and Agra.
In more recent years this stadium has been often used to honour the homecoming of victorious Greek athletes, most notably the Greece national football team after its victory at the 2004 European Football Championship and also the opening ceremony of the World Athletics Championships in 1997, on a concept by composer Vangelis Papathanasiou.

 Apostolos Nikolaidis
Apostolos Nikolaidis (1896 - 15 October 1980) marked Panathinaikos with his personality during the first years of the intervening period between the two world wars.
The dispute was about Messaris wanting to study engineering at NTUA, while Nikolaidis did not want him to be involved in anything except football.
Nikolaidis won by a small margin and he immediately ousted from Panathinaikos all those who stood against him, including a figure with mythical proportions to Panathinaikos fans, the founder of the club George Kalafatis.
