"Appalachia Waltz" was recorded previously by O'Connor with cellist Yo-Yo Ma and Meyer, and it remains one of the most moving compositions in the violinist's vast repertoire.
Tripple-threat O'Connor is a jazz artist, a respected classical/folk composer and a fiddler who performs chamber-music Americana in the "Appalachia Waltz" style that first blew audiences away a decade ago.
Since then, cellist Yo-Yo Ma,who was featured with O'Connor and bassist Edgar Meyer on the first two "Appalachia Waltz" CDs and tours, has made a solo version of the wistful title track his signature piece around the world, as an eloquent little encore.

The Appalachia Waltz ensemble, a string trio founded in 2002, grew out of O'Connor's internalized earlier experiences, and appears at the Peddie School's Mount-Burke Theater on Saturday, February 28.
The Appalachia Waltz trio is scheduled to appear at New York's 92nd Street "Y" during the 2004-'05 season.
It is difficult to say whether O'Connor has his greatest impact as composer or performer - with the Appalachia Waltz trio, which performs in Hightstown and Red Bank; with the jazz trio Hot Swing; and with a bluegrass trio where he joins Chris Thile, mandolin, and Bryan Sutton, guitar.

The O'Connor Appalachian Waltz is meant to be soulful (I think) and contains some nice drone-sounds but is in no way a waltz, - at least I couldn't catch a 3/4 rhythm.
The "Cellist of Sarajevo" is a picture of Vase Miskina's playing in memorium of those killed in the Sarajevo bread queue bombing, but I can't imagine that Miskina played only dirges on his cello.

On his latest album “Crossing Bridges,” his Appalachia Waltz Trio, also starring violist Carol Cook and cellist Natalie Haas, does exactly that in extending the classical-country crossings he created with cellist Yo-Yo Ma and double bassist Edgar Meyer on the 1996 “Appalachia Waltz” and 2000Appalachian Journeyalbums.
Most of the “Crossing Bridges” material, in fact, originated in those previous sets, with O’Connor’s younger associates bringing their own verve to the recording, which was taped live in concert last May at Clayton College and State University in Morrow, Georgia.
