 | | Tunicata (=sub phylum urochordata) consists 4 classes and around 2500 species, all marine: class ascidiacea (benthic, solitary or colonial sessile tunicates); class thaliacea (solitary or colonial, pelagic planktonic tunicates; 3 classes: pyrosomida, salpida and doliolida); class appendicularia (=larvacea, solitary, planktonic tunicates) and class sorberacea (benthic, abyssal tunicates). |
 | | Our interest is in the thaliacea and appendicularia, both of which are planktonic, often referred to as gelatinous zooplankton as a consequence of their watery body tissue. |
 | | All are marine suspension feeders, utilising pharyngeal gill slits for a mucus sheet feeding mechanism. |
