		The content of houses, animal and faecal pellets of the filter feeding O´kopleura dioica (Tunicata appendicularia) were analysed by Flow cytometry.
		In laboratory experiments with monoalgal populations Prochlorococcus, Synechococcus and the picoeucaryote Isochrisis galbana were retained by houses, transited through the digestive tract and were aggregated in faecal pellets.
		The Prochlorococcus and the picoeukaryotes are efficiently digested whereas Synechococcus transit through the gut without any apparent degradation and are aggregated in the faecal pellets..

		Tunicata (=sub phylum urochordata) consists 4 classes and around 2500 species, all marine: class ascidiacea (benthic, solitary or colonial sessile tunicates); class thaliacea (solitary or colonial, pelagic planktonic tunicates; 3 classes: pyrosomida, salpida and doliolida); class appendicularia (=larvacea, solitary, planktonic tunicates) and class sorberacea (benthic, abyssal tunicates).
		Our interest is in the thaliacea and appendicularia, both of which are planktonic, often referred to as gelatinous zooplankton as a consequence of their watery body tissue.
		All are marine suspension feeders, utilising pharyngeal gill slits for a mucus sheet feeding mechanism.

	FREAKS OF NATURE
		The appendiculates or copelates or larvaceans are ancestors of the vertebrate phylogenetic line with a chorda dorsalisin their long tail.
		Together with the Ascidiacea and the Thaliacea the Appendicularia make up the phylum Tunicata which are all characterized by a large filtration basket with two to numerous gill slits and the name-giving tunica which is a proteinaceous, delicate or strong body sheath.
		Unlike the sessile Ascidiacea (sea squirts) and the planktonic Thaliacea (salps), which show chorda and tail only during ontogenesis, the pelagic appendiculates keep tail and chorda all their live long.

	Pelagic Tunicates
		Most species filter water by a variety of mechanisms to extract fine planktonic food particles.
		Those within two much smaller classes (Thaliacea and Appendicularia), with some representatives listed here, are unique among the tunicates in that they have abandoned the benthic existence in favor of a holoplanktonic lifestyle.
		The Class Appendicularia (also known as Larvacea) includes a variety of mostly inconspicuous, small pelagic tunicates.
