		Appenzell has what most experts and aficionados declare to be the best cheese in Switzerland and this year, for the second in a row, the canton has received the award for the best raclette cheese in the country.
		Appenzell Innerhoden is the Protestant pocket cradled in the arms of Appenzell Usserhoden, the Roman Catholic counterpart.
		It is not unusual to see Appenzeller men carefully tending their herds shoeless, dressed in traditional garb, smoking a pipe and with a small cow earring shining brightly on one ear.

		Appenzell Inner Rhoden, with a population of only around 15,000, is the last canton in Switzerland that still observes Landsgemeinde (pronounced lands-ga-mine-da) now that its sister canton, Appenzell Outer Rhoden, abolished it several years ago.
		Although Landsgemeinde is so widely revered that Appenzell's observance is televised nationally, the rest of the nation abandoned it because cantons had become too populous to manage a gathering in a single location.

		There were lots of cows in town by mid-morning, but as I left town later in the day before these cows left, there seemed to be just as many cows as ever in the fields in the surrounding countryside.
		This made the town much more interesting than when I stopped by in November 1997 when the town was cold, damp, and there wasn't much going on.
		The train took me from Appenzell right to the Ebenalp lift, then after my ride to the top and hike back down, by train to Urnäsch, connecting to a Postal bus that took me right to the Säntis lift, then back again to Appenzell after riding up and down the Säntis lift.
