Appian - WCD (Wiki Classical Dictionary)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Appian of Alexandria wrote an autobiography, but it is almost completely lost, and consequently we hardly know anything about the historian from Alexandria.
As Appian was still in Egypt by the end of the reign of Trajan, he must have moved to Rome at a later date, and the emperors whom he claims to have addressed must therefore have been either Hadrian and Antoninus Pius or Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius.
Moreover, Appian is not faced with the problem that historians who strictly adhered to the chronological sequence of events had to cope with: if an enemy of Rome has a specific custom, they had to explain it twice or leave it unexplained.

Its construction was started in 312 BC by the consul Appius Claudius Caecus, restructuring an existing track that connected Rome with the Alban Hills (this road has been supposed to be the one that originally brought Latins from Albalonga to the future capital, at the time of its founding).
The original track of the Appian Way connected Rome (heading in the area of Terme di Caracalla) with Ariccia, Forum Appii, Terracina, Fondi, Formia, Minturnae (Minturno), Sinuessa (Mondragone) and finally Capua.
A new Appian Way was built in parallel with the old one in 1784.

Appian way, Rome. monuments of Rome, Italy
Stazio, a Latin poet, called it " Queen of roads" for the splendour of its burial monuments, the splendid patrician residences in the suburban section and for the evocative beauty of the land that it crossed.
It became in short time the elected road, sacred to the cult of the dead, crossed during the Latin holidays by the crowd going to the temple of Giove on the summit of mount Cavo or to the temple of Diana, by the shores of the Nemi lake.
The Appian way ran here straight -after this the name of " recto " - at first followed the line of an existing road to the Alban hills and reached the Agro Pontino.

In recent years Appian has experienced a significant rehabilitation, the effects of which are readily apparent in Carter's extensive, useful discussion of the historian and his work in the Introduction.

Particularly valuable is the treatment of Appian's place in the ancient historiographical tradition, the distinctive features of the narrative, and the source question.

 Sulla and the proscriptions
When he was still a proconsul in 82, he planned and executed the proscriptions against his enemies for revenge, especially from the Marian camp, and against rich Romans because he needed money to pay his veterans.
Here I will look at Appian and Plutarch’s versions of the proscriptions and compare the two: first we will find out about the authors origins and lives, about their own sources for their histories, then about the differences and similarities between both versions of the proscriptions accounts.
Appian wrote a little more on the military point of view and Plutarch on the personal side of Sulla, but both authors agree that the proscriptions were exceptionally cruel and horrible, even for those times.
