Backup is a simple Mac OS X-only software program made by Apple Computer for file backups.
Backup can be used in connection with either a user's.Mac iDisk or the Macintosh's CD-RW or DVD-R drive to make safe, archival copies of critical files and folders.
However, on November 5, 2003 Apple released Backup 2.0, which adds a few new features and promises to be far more reliable than its predecessors.

Having used Backup along side Synchronize Plus for a few years, I have found it to be one of the best solutions for people with basic backup needs.
Backup is really a.Mac program, in that it functions best to store settings, and it does not seem as suited to clone data.

Apple is readying Backup 3, a major upgrade to the backup software included with the company's.Mac internet services, Think Secret has learned.

A looked at Backup 2 and found that it was very limited, but mainly I didn't want to get used to something that would stop working if I ever decided to lapse my.Mac membership.

Apple Backup (part of Apple's.Mac suite) to backup files on drive to CDRWs, but stopped using it for a few reasons: 1) Apple Backup will not usually work unless it can contact Apple's iDisk servers, whether you want to backup to your iDisk or not.
This problem may be specific to my configuration, but since I can't rely on Backup to burn discs correctly, it's not of much use as a backup tool.
Wubba BackUP is free to use, but donations are very much appreciated (especially since I don't have a real job at the moment).

A utility like this would be incentive for Apple to make.Mac actually worth $99 by adding more features or substantially improving the old ones.
Apple is typically the leader in innovation, but things like their lack of OS-installed backup utility truly are a sore spot.
The least we could do is give a GUI to the UNIX backup program (if one exists that is), hopefully however we could do all that Apple's Backup does and more - Apple's version is very simple so it wouldn't be that difficult to do.

I have never used Apple Backup Utility but it sounds you add files to be backed-up by an Open File Dialog, which allows you to enter any local path by pressing Command Shift G to opens a window allowing you to enter /my/hidden/directory/ or whatever you would like.
Apple's Backup2 only works if your home directory is on the same partition as the system's.
