Apple currently has no monitor solution between its 17-inch CRT monitor and its top-of-the-line 22-inch Cinema Display.
A number of attendees said Apple's strategy leads them to assume Apple doesn't think there is a market for monitors in the middle between a 17-inch and 22-inch and as a result, are willing to give up the market and sales to other third-party monitors.
Current Apple displays all use an Apple Display Connector that packs video, power and USB into one cord and will only work with the new Power Mac G4 towers and Cube models.

Next year I get rid of my G4 iMac and get a G5, though I do like the design of the iMac, having a 23 inch monitor would be nice.

All are supposed to have that brushed aluminum look to match the Power Mac G5, two FireWire ports, and stand on a pedestal with an adjustable back hinge.
All of them also ditch Apple's ADC connector in favor of DVI (something which should make the monitors more friendly to PC owners).
Supposedly these will be announced sometime before June 28th, the start of Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference.

And after I spent as much as Apples previously overpriced 17" display for a 15, I think I can safely comment on Viewsonic.
I even posted a while back about some of the funny things it does when the computer changes resolution, like when playing a game or watching a movie in fullscreen.
I haven't tried Apple's new line of displays but if they're anything like the last, I'm sure they will be widely accepted in the digital content creation world.
