AppleTalk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The AppleTalk address resolution protocol (AARP) allowed AppleTalk hosts to automatically generate their own network addresses, and the Name Binding Protocol (NBP) was essentially a dynamic DNS system which mapped network addresses to user-readable names.
For some the old AppleTalk protocol was considered clunky and often called 'chatty', notably on larger networks and WANs where the naming services generated considerable unwanted traffic.
The Apple Filing Protocol (AFP), formerly AppleTalk Filing Protocol, is the protocol for communicating with AppleShare file servers.

Apple Filing Protocol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
AFP versions 3.0 and greater rely exclusively on TCP/IP (port 548 or 427) for establishing communication, supporting AppleTalk only as a service discovery protocol.
AFP 3.0 was introduced in Mac OS X Server 10.0.3, and was used through Mac OS X Server 10.1.5.
AFP URLs take the form: afp:///, where is the server's IP address, Domain Name System (DNS) name, or Bonjour name, and is the name of the share point.

 Lecture 3: Apple Talk
Apple's early commitment to networking is one of the characteristics that made their products popular for small workgroup applications.
The Apple Talk protocol suite was introduced in the mid 1980's, which is the same period of time that the industry was focusing on (and debating about) the need for standards.
Apple was one of the early adopters of the OSI reference model.

 AppleTalk (Linktionary term)
Protocols in the network layer package data from upper layers and deliver it to the LAP manager in the data link layer.
The main purpose of protocols in the session layer is to establish and maintain communication sessions between two nodes.
AFP uses ASP in the session layer to establish a communications session, then relies on ADSP to ensure the accuracy of file transfers of the network.

AFP Logger™ works with any AppleShare IP file server to provide a detailed log of accesses to the server, plus a real-time display of the server's operation.
Logging both user and file access detail, AFP Logger provides AppleShare administrators with much-needed information on how their Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) server is being used, which files are being accessed the most, and potential security and other problems with the server.
AFP Logger provides a real-time, text format log of accesses to the AFP server including: - names and addresses of users - login and file access errors - bytes transferred by each user - time connected for each user - specific files opened and deleted - password changes.

Online Security: NEWS & EVENTS - File Sharing Vulnerability Discovered in Mac OS X
A security issue that could result in stolen passwords and data on Friday was revealed for Apple Computer Inc.'s Apple Filing Protocol, a component of Mac OS X 10.3.2, a k a Panther.
Adams said, systems open to remote connections, such as in educational institutions, would be vulnerable to "man in the middle" attacks, where a third server could intercept and harvest passwords surreptitiously.
Compounding the problem, Adams added, was that SSH connectivity for AFP would not work at all in the initial releases of Mac OS X 10.3 and 10.3.1.
