Apple Lossless - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Apple Lossless (also known as Apple Lossless Encoder, ALE, or Apple Lossless Audio Codec, ALAC) is an audio codec developed by Apple Computer for lossless encoding of digital music.
Apple Lossless data is stored within an MP4 container with the filename extension.m4a.
The Apple Lossless Encoder was introduced as a component of QuickTime 6.5.1 on April 28, 2004 and thus as a feature of iTunes 4.5.

Neil's World - Apple Lossless Encoder
What is suprising is that Apple chose to adopt their own format, and not one of the (many) other lossless encoding formats.
It is, however, slower at encoding and decoding, and files are typically a megabyte or so larger, according to this comparison provided by the FLAC project, however this HydrogenAudio topic suggests it is faster.
I think the reason Apple didn’t use an existing lossless codec is because FLAC and SHN are relatively processor intensive to decode.

Apple's lossless compression makes iTunes an audiophile's delight
Apple Lossless Encoding can be used for audio from other sources, too.
The only other lossless audio compression method, available for Windows, Mac OS, Mac OS X and Linux, is FLAC, which stands for "free lossless audio codec." FLAC is sometimes used by bands that want to release their music on the Internet but don't want to compromise on audio quality.
Apple avoided using FLAC in part because its own method would be able to maintain control over music copying if it were used for iTunes Music Store audiophile releases.

Apple have also released an update for the iPod which is required in order to allow iPod's to take advantage of the new software features in the iTunes update.
Apple apparently forget to make it clear that the new software had features, such as Apple Lossless encoding, which may not work with versions of the iPod which are older than third generation.
Apple has stated that there are a few reported incidents of the software not working correctly, and recommends that users contact AppleCare, the Apple support system, if they encounter any problems.

Oftentimes, people use lossless formats as a means of archiving their CDs in case the original gets damaged; they will then batch transcode from the lossless archive copy to a lossy format like MP3 for use in their portable music players.
WAV is lossless, of course, but the problem with WAV is that it does not support metadata, and hence lacks any sort of tagging functionality.

Apple’s move to allow FairPlay access to Macrovision is a strong move as it allows for other options, besides Microsoft, for the formats available of locked down CDs created by Macrovision.
However, the success Apple has had so far with their digital music service and players, as well as their adoption of MPEG 4, has catapulted AAC into what may potentially be the winner's ring.

Furthermore because the data is stored at the start of the file, v2 tags typically require that the entire audio file be erased and recreated, a process which is time consuming and tedious.
Obviously the ideal way is to tag during encoding because all metadata is available via CDDB/FreedB and it avoids having to rewrite the entire file in the case of ID3v2/Ogg/FLAC tags.
Sometimes, those who are particularly picky will have two copies of their music: a lossless copy, and an MP3 version for their portable.

"Apple may have kept details of the lossless encoding format introduced in recent versions of iTunes to itself, but that hasn't stopped one developer from reverse engineering an encoded file, to compile his own decoder," Simon Aughton reports for PC Pro.
Apple's lossless is just a convenient way for audiophiles who hate lossy compression for their music and don't want to encode their CDs or other music in a lossy format when putting it on their Mac or iPod.
Why Apple chose to go with their own lossless format is beyond me. I still don't think I'll ever consider using Apple's lossless format for recording my cd's, but with this decoder, the format at least can be read in Linux or Windows.

Lossless Compression Compared with image compression, lossless compression algorithms are not nearly as widely used in audio compression.
The primary users of lossless compression are audio engineers and those consumers who disdain the quality loss from lossy compression techniques such as Vorbis and MP3.
However, convolution with the filter [-1 1] (that is, taking the first difference) tends to whiten the spectrum a bit and allows traditional lossless compression to do its job; integration restores the original signal.

Now, as bandwidth improves and hard drives expand, higher quality lossless file formats such as FLAC and Monkeys could become the next standard for encoding, as listeners demand none of the audio loss that normal, or "lossy," compression entails.
At half the size of a WAV and five times larger than your most common MP3 file (128 kbps), lossless encoding compresses the music file without permanently discarding audio data.
Audiophiles will argue that lossless sounds way better than 128 kbps, while many others don't notice a difference, and even if they do, it's not enough for them to want to re-encode their music.

Apple Lossless Encoding (also known as Apple Lossless, Apple Lossless Audio Codec or ALE) is an audio codec developed by Apple Computer that provides full, uncompressed CD-quality audio in about half the space of the original file.
By contrast, constant-bitrate (CBR) encoding uses about the same amount of memory for simple and complex passages — so the user is more likely to experience audible or visible loss of quality during complex parts, especially with lower-bitrate files.
