| | What is an Apple II? (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-06) |
 | | Although the machine that replaced the Apple I was the only one actually called an "Apple II" by Apple, it spawned a large family of compatible machines, all of whose names begin with "Apple II", and so the whole family is frequently referred to in general as the "Apple II", as I have done here. |
 | | The original Apple II was released in 1977, and it was one of the first three computers that was sold as a complete unit, the other two being the TRS-80 Model I and the Commodore PET 2001. |
 | | Eventually, the original Apple II was replaced by the very similar Apple II plus in 1979, and this in turn was replaced by the most common and longest-lived member of the family, the Apple //e, in 1983. |
