Think Secret - Source: Apple may start mail order operation
Apple may bring its growing direct sales effort into a new arena with a mail order operation designed to compete with catalog sellers, according to a source familiar with the company's retail operations.
The source characterized Apple's mail order plans as a continuation of its existing direct sales initiative, where the company has used its online store, chain of retail stores, and specialized corporate sales groups to bring sales direct and cut out other resellers.
It's not known whether a mail order or catalog operation is the only component of the sales subsidiary Apple is planning, and it's similarly unclear as to whether or not Apple has firmly decided to go through with the new initiative.

Apple Mail is included with and requires Mac OS X. Because it is bundled with Mac OS X, you cannot install it separately.
Apple Mail does not work with the data (such as calendar and journal items) stored in these folders, so it ignores them.
This is a key feature of Apple Mail, and a very helpful one for reducing the amount of unwanted junk mail you receive.

 Mail Scripts
Mail Scripts may not be redistributed via the web or any other electronic media except with explicit written consent by the author.
Mail Scripts are currently fully localized in the following languages: English (development language), German, Dutch (translation by Guy De Lee), French (translation by Sébastien Marty), Italian (translation by Marcello Teodori), Greek (translation by the Hellenic Macintosh User Group), Brazilian Portuguese (translation by Gui Leite), and Norwegian (translation by Egil Helland).
In order to convince Mail to actually send of those messages, Mail will be quit and restarted by the scripts (you should probably make sure that you have all your drafts saved before running the scripts in order not to potentially lose your latest changes to your current drafts).

E-Commerce News: Apple News : How Apple's Spam Filter Stacks Up
Apple says it has gone beyond the approach taken by most filters, which is to look for words or addresses only in the header information of an e-mail.
A technology that Apple calls "latent adaptive semantic analysis" is a process of searching through a message's entire text for patterns of words in combination, according to Apple representative Ken Bereskin.
Apple's Mail doesn't automatically include X-Spam-Flag as a rule, which means it doesn't work as a good citizen out of the box.

Since Mail's behavior amounts to stalls on certain connections to the server, you can use Activity Viewer to monitor these connections and force-quit or kill the bad connection(s), allowing you to retry accessing your mail message more efficiently than simply re launching the program or switching folders.

MacDevCenter.com: The Fight Against Spam, Part 2
Interestingly enough, the technology that underlies the Junk Mail filter began its life as an information retrieval system, developed in the Apple labs to help users who managed thousands or millions of large documents find the one they were looking for easily.
The part of Mac OS X that does all that is called the "Apple data kit." It's an engine that specializes in vector representation and can be used to find documents, sort a corpus into topics, and yes, it even auto-discovers them.
Even though Apple is not the only company working on such technologies, they do seem to be the only ones to have made it so accessible to end users and powerful at the same time.

 Outage blocks Mac.com e-mail | CNET News.com
Apple posted a message to the discussion boards of its Web site Sunday noting that about 20 percent of customers would be unable to gain access to e-mail because of the maintenance but said it expected to complete the work in about five hours.
However, a number of Mac users complained that the outage was lasting longer and said that in addition to being unable to receive new e-mail, it appeared that their old mail had been lost.
Apple responded to Sahlberg and others that it was aware of the issues customers were facing but assured them their e-mail was safe.

If mail from our lists, which are not open relays, process no SPAM, and are all manual-subscribe (meaning people had to request to be on the list), is being blocked, that means that other "legitimate" mail is also being blocked.
Again, while I agree with the *idea* behind the filtering that is going on, my view is that if Apple is advertising Mac.com addresses as useful email accounts, they should at least make sure that users are getting their legitimate mail.
This story, along with the one where Apple is removing files and blocking access to mac.com web pages/ftp because they are "too popular," makes me wonder if everyone with a decent level of knowledge will set up their own servers for http, mail, ftp, etc.

This is Not a Brain Surgery - Apple Mail.app user UI gotchas
In Apple Mail coming with MacOS X "Panther" the order of fields in message composition was To, CC, Subject, BCC.
What happens is that the mail server interprets a single word in BCC field as local mailbox name, verifies if it is present and if there is no such mailbox, it gives appropriate error message.
However developers of Apple Mail application chose to hide actual error message from user (probably afraid to confuse him with technical lingo) and show generic one.

Creating Secure Transactions on Mac OS X server Using SSL
Mail clients carefully hide password data from other users of the same physical machine, but when they make a POP request to retrieve mail, they send strings like “USER bob PASS b4tm4n” unencrypted.
This means that all mail clients that wish to connect to your server have to support SSL encryption for SMTP, IMAP, and POP connections.
Mail clients should be made aware of that fact.

AppleInsider | Inside Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger": Mail 2.0
Apple's recently announced Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger" operating system update will include a major revision to the company's proprietary e-mail client, "Mail." The new version, Mail 2.0, will reportedly feature a new "Smart Mailbox" technology along with dozens of other enhancements, sources told AppleInsider as part of their ongoing coverage of the Tiger OS.
For years, Apple's Mail application featured a slide-out mailbox drawer as the primary means of account and folder navigation.
A new mail preference allows users to check spelling in messages "as I type", "never", or "when I click send." Another new preference lets users specify if all new mail should be sent from a specific account or the account of the last viewed mailbox.
