Toolfarm - Plugins, Software Sales and Distribution: Review: Apple Motion
I've been working with Apple Motion for several weeks now, and can comment a bit about how it stacks up to AE and other compositing programs.
Motion is a resource hog; my dual 2 gig G5 is a minimum to run it effectively, using the mid-grade ATI Radeon 9600XT AGP video card, with 128 megs of VRAM.
Apple Motion a very good asset for graphic artists, but AE is still more comprehensive than almost anything else available.

Edit Review — Apple Motion 2
Motion's hook is that just about everything happens in realtime, and for many media artists, that is a powerful hook.
Motion did a great job of upsampling the lower resolution on the LCD so that it was still very watchable.
Motion 2 is much easier to use in its simpler mode than a similar composting program like After Effects, and if you want AE-style power, a few clicks will bring you into the more complex mode.

Motion 2 is also part of Apple’s Final Cut Studio, which counts Final Cut Pro HD and DVD Studio Pro among its principal elements for a relatively complete media and authoring studio experience.

Review - Exploring Apple Motion Digital-Tutors
With the coming of Apple's new Motion program we are all anxiously awaiting the spate of books and discs which will help the Motion user to quickly grasp the ins and outs of its many parameters quickly, if not always easily.
Motion, like Live Type is simple and intuitive on the outside, but for those who aspire to integrate all there is to know, a deeper delving into the program is mandatory.
Bottom line, Exploring Apple Motion is an excellent disc by which to learn the ropes of this great new application.

 Macworld: Review: Motion 2
Motion still lacks a true 3-D environment—you can’t set multiple cameras or move objects within 3-D space—but when combined with basic 2-D motion, the Basic 3D filter allows you to simulate many of the 3-D operations and movements that you’d get in a true 3-D compositing program.
Motion 1 had excellent particle filters, and Motion 2 builds on these with dozens of new particle presets that give you a huge assortment of natural and stylized particle effects.
Motion isn’t an After Effects killer, but it can replace After Effects for many motion-graphics and compositing tasks, and it does so with a working environment that is tremendously superior.

 Macworld: Review: Motion 1.0
Motion’s interface derives elements from many different Apple apps, but with its tabbed file browser and pop-up menu panes, it most closely resembles DVD Studio Pro 3.
Though Motion provides a typical timeline-based interface for layering and animating elements in a composite, its interface is more compelling because of the addition of behaviors.
Motion can’t always muster a full 30 frames per second, but even if playback drops to half that speed, it’s still good enough to judge the overall impact of an effect, to synchronize settings on multiple layers, or to adjust your composite to fit a voice-over.

Now, to begin, Motion is a program that, last year, had the entire creative community abuzz with excitement, yet failed somehow to maintain that excitement after its rollout.
At any rate, the price point--at $299--was great for a professional motion graphics application; the features were solid, in many cases quite innovative; and the performance was simply awesome; but the program just didn't quite catch on as many had expected.
After all, Motion can't do everything that After Effects can do, and, even if it could, few people would be willing to turn from such a core tool as After Effects in favor of a new upstart like Motion, even if all of Apple's other professional creative tools have proved top-notch.
