  PlainTalk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
PlainTalk is the collective name for several speech synthesis (MacInTalk) and speech recognition technologies, developed by Apple Computer.
The result was "PlainTalk," released with the AV Quadras of 1993.
It was used by Apple in the introduction of the Macintosh in 1984, to let the personal computer introduce itself to the world.

Apple's now-defunct Newton PDA - particularly Newton 2.0 - offered good handwriting recognition on its entire screen; the ever-popular Palm devices recognize a stylized handwriting (Graffiti) in a small area at the bottom of the screen.
PlainTalk's first rumblings were felt in 1990, when speech recognition labs complained of a sudden "brain drain." Apple, sparing no expense, was hiring every researcher it could find.
After about a year of intensive work, Apple began demonstrating the fruits of its labors, code-named Casper, which became publicly available as PlainTalk in the AV Macs of 1993; it was then made standard in 1994 as part of System 7.1.2, with the emergence of the PowerPC-based Macs.

The Pabst fan really is a bit thicker than the Delta it replaces, and Apple had to have Pabst mill out a slot in the fan in order for it to fit in the Delta slots.
These were recorded using an old beige G3 (in my server closet, but still sound from it could leak through onto this recording) and an Apple Plaintalk microphone taped to a table about 8 feet from the MDD machine using Amadeus II.

The iParrott iP ST is a fine performer, but no PlainTalk to USB adapter is available as far as I know.

Personally, I've been mostly using the the Viavoice Andrea USB microphone headset with iListen on my iBook, and a VXi iParrott iP ST Stereo Multimedia Headset with an Apple PlainTalk connector with my Pismo PowerBook, which is the last Apple laptop to ship with a PlainTalk microphone jack.
The iParrott iP ST is definitely the better performer of the two, but no PlainTalk to USB adapter is available as far as I know.
As I observed above, this is not a USB microphone, so it must be used with a USB adapter such as the Griffin iMic (recently upgraded to iMic 2) that I have, the VXi Parrott USB Adaptor or Andrea Electronics' USB Pod.

Until recently, Apple gave, along with its PowerMacs, Plaintalk mikes (now sold separately) which, more often than not, ended gathering dust under a shelf, a worthy tribute to their blatant lack of handiness.
Solder the RED wire of the Plaintalk to tab 2 or 3 whichever suits you (marked MIC on the electronic board).
PS: Apple and Plaintalk are registered trademarks belonging to their respective owners (Apple in this case).

While I haven’t played with audio input devices in a good long while, I did see this review on Macintouch last week of the Samson C01U USB mic, which seems to be a decent podcasting device.
Microphones that plug in through the line-in jack is something that Apple has done a little differently than other computer manufacturers.
Alternatively, you can pick up an old Apple PlainTalk microphone pretty cheaply on eBay and that will also work, though the sound quality won’t be as great as a USB one.
