  X11: Apple's secret formula | CNET News.com
Apple hopes the release of X11 will spur more rapid acceptance of Mac OS X among Unix users and lead to faster porting of Unix applications to the operating system.
X11 provides a windowing environment that lets Unix programs run on Mac OS X essentially the same way they do on their native operating systems.
Apple's attempt to court existing Unix users and Linux experimenters to Mac OS X comes as many traditional Unix workstation and server manufacturers, such as IBM and Sun Microsystems, have expanded their Linux strategies.

Apple received a number of similar reports and it seems this is an ssh issue, running "ssh -Y" instead of "ssh -X" to forward the X connection seems to fix it.
According to Apple, the expectation is that this is fixed in 10.4.3.

This is exciting news, because Apple's X11 launches much faster; nearly instantly when compared with OroborOSX and XDarwin, and Apple has enabled native hardware support using the Quartz graphics system for dramatic speed improvements and true integration between the X11 and Mac OS X environments.
X11 also supports 3-button mice and mouse 3-button emulation.
Warning: Apple's X11 is currently Public Beta (pre-release) software, and although our experience has been pleasant with no major issues, please be cautious with Apple's X11 and treat it as Beta software.

 Michael Tsai - Blog - Apple’s X11
But that X11 applications consist of standard GUI elements such as windows, menus, and buttons does not change the fact that they are Unix programs: tricky to install and remove, poorly designed, and utterly lacking in Mac-ness.
Not only does it make it easier to bring X11 apps to the Mac without rewriting them in Carbon or Cocoa, but the fact that it’s an Apple product means that Apple is implicitly saying that this is an OK thing to do.
I worry that Apple’s X11 server will encourage more ports of this type, and that regular Mac users will be forced to use them.

The final stage (and I'm really hoping that Apple will get involved at this stage and bundle the resulting office suite with the OS as iOffice, or something) is to redo all of the menus, dialogs etc. so that they look just like a real OS X app.

For those not listening to my rants, XDarwin disabled the ability to use the meta key (er, the Apple key), somewhere between now and back when I last installed XFree86 via fink (during the Panther days).
Going for Apple's implementation is that xquartz is supposed to be bad-ass fast, _and_ they fixed the z-order problem with "X" windows and "mac" windows interleaving.
The only work around, is Apple-C (if I allow X11 to take over "meta", and lose my Apple-V), or move the mouse to the menu bar and manually select "copy".
