RFC 1504 (rfc1504) - Appletalk Update-Based Routing Protocol: Enhanced App
If the length of an AppleTalk data packet in bytes is greater than that of the data field of a foreign-protocol packet, a forwarding exterior router must fragment the AppleTalk data packet into multiple foreign-protocol packets, then forward these packets to their destination.
AppleTalk networking software running on a node on a hidden network lists all of the AppleTalk zone names exported by exterior routers connected to a tunnel, but may list the names of only some or none of the devices in those zones.
The exterior router maps UIs corresponding to network numbers for remote networks-that is, networks connected to other exterior routers on the tunnel-that are in packets received through the tunneling port to network numbers in the remapping range configured for the local internet, as shown in Figure 4-2.

AppleTalk Remote Access, or ARA, was a protocol stack that allowed AppleTalk to be run over modems.
ARA slowly disappeared in the late 1990s when TCP/IP took over the vast majority of networking needs, notably remote access.
In Mac OS X it is no longer required, as Apple has migrated the vast majority of their networking software to IP, and includes remote access software for free.

Because remote control applications pass only screen, keyboard, and mouse updates, they were useful for providing access to applications that would be too slow for users connected directly to the network via modem.
Since remote node allows a remote PC to act as a real node on the network, extended through phone lines, it allows users to do things in generally the same way as they would at their office desks.
That is, your remote user dials your host or router, is prompted for a password before being given access to your network, and then can use her normal NOS password to access network resources.

Yes, the only way currently to change your AppleTalk Remote Access (ARA) password is via mounting an AppleShare volume or by changing the password as the AppleShare (or FileShare) administrator on the ARA host.
Remotely changing the AppleTalk Remote Access password can be accomplished by mounting an AppleShare volume on the ARA host, and changing the password for that specific AppleShare volume.
If you were to mount a volume on a Macintosh other than the ARA Macintosh, this would of course be a separate Users and Groups file, and changing this password would not affect your ARA password.

Since ARA was later improved so that you didn't connect to only "AppleTalk" Protocol networks to allow remote access, Apple dropped the "AppleTalk" part -- and now is known as only "Remote Access".
So ARA is really a package, a control panel, and had its own protocol (AppleTalk) -- but now it is just part of another package, and uses standard protocols (TCP/IP).
Then it supported the "remote" dial in for TCP (which is called PPP) -- this does about the same thing as ARA does for the AppleTalk protocol but it does for TCP/IP and the Internet.

For dedicated ARA lines, it is sufficient to turn off error correction completely in the modem; for multiuse lines it is preferable to leave all forms of non-MNP4 error correction enabled so that users of other protocols can achieve error-corrected connections.
