Appleby, fully Appleby-in-Westmorland, is a town in Cumbria (A county of northwestern England), in England (A division of the United Kingdom).
Appleby is on the Settle-Carlisle Railway (additional info and facts about Settle-Carlisle Railway) and is overlooked by the (currently closed) Appleby Castle, a predominantly Norman (An inhabitant of Normandy) structure which provided the home for Lady Anne Clifford in the seventeenth century.
Appleby's main industry is tourism due to its remote location, scenery and closeness to the Lake District (A popular tourist area in northwestern England including England's largest lake and highest mountain).

 Appleby Castle, Westmorland
Westmorland's best preserved Castle stands in the heart of its county town (nowadays referred to as Appleby-in-Westmorland, so that people don't forget that it wasn't always just a small town in the huge county of Cumbria).
Twice in the 1300s Appleby town was invaded by the Scots, but on both occasions they seem to have avoided the Castle.
Destruction came in 1569 when the Castle was dismantled during the Rising of the North against Elizabeth I. Lady Anne Clifford later restored the Castle, as she did at the other Clifford Castles (Brougham, Brough, Pendragon and Skipton).

Appleby Castle, overlooking the town of Appleby-in-Westmorland and the River Eden, was founded by Ranulf le Meschin at the beginning of the 12th century.
In about 1170 a square stone keep was added, known as Caesars Tower, which is now one of the best preserved examples of its type, having been little altered in 800 years.
Much of the stone for this building came by demolishing the nearby castles of Brougham and Brough.

When Westmorland was merged with Cumberland in 1974 to form the new county of Cumbria, Appleby fought to retain its previous status and so the official title of the town is now Appleby-in-Westmorland, a permanent reminder of its former role.
Arguably the most historic of the former Westmorland's county towns, Appleby is quietly located in the valley of the River Eden although nearby are the barren fells which separate it from the upper reaches of Teesdale.

After the Civil War, she re-occupied Appleby Castle and celebrated the return of Charles II to the throne.
