The station was built four years after the line had been opened, a result of local pressure from inhabitants and a generous amount of persuasion from the local vicar.
A little further north and we pass the former Cumwhinton station which closed back in 1956, the station building is now a private residence and is kept in excellent condition.
As Cumwhinton is in commuter distance from Carlisle there was talk that the station may reopen - but it doesn't appear to be happening too quickly!

You catch a glimpse of the viaduct as you approach Ribblehead station, but altough the trip across it is great for the views, to truly appreciate this great structure, you need to get off the train and go for a walk.
There are plenty of accommodation options along the Settle-Carlisle railway route, with youth hostels at Stainforth (a short walk from Settle), Kirkby Stephen, Dent (the hostel is a few miles walk from the station and the village of Dent itself), Dufton (a few miles from Appleby station) and Carlisle (summer months only).

The Midland Railway Station at Appleby was built to the same specification as Settle and Kirkby Stephen, with a large goods shed.
The Eden Valley Railway Society has hopes to rebuild the line from Appleby to Kirkby Stephen East, and possibly on to Stainmore, rebuilding the Belah viaduct.
It is one of the major stations on the route with long platforms, and a metal footbridge.

A plaque on the Appleby station building commemorates Eric Treacy, Bishop of Wakefield and one of the great railway photographers who collapsed and died on Appleby station whilst photographing a steam special.
The station is constructed using the 'large' type design and built with bricks, unusual for the Settle-Carlisle where most buildings have used stone.
