Appleseed - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Appleseed, like much of Masamune's work, merges elements of the cyberpunk and mecha genres with a heavy dosage of politics, philosophy, and sociology.
Appleseed Hypernotes was released in 1996 as a collected volume in Japan.
Appleseed was also the inspiration for two anime adaptations, the first an OVA released in 1988 and directed by Kazuyoshi Katayama, the second a CGI movie released in 2004 and directed by Shinji Aramaki.

Johnny Appleseed, born John Chapman (September 26, 1774 – March 18, 1845), was an American pioneer nurseryman, and missionary for the Church of the New Jerusalem, founded by Emanuel Swedenborg.
Appleseed's managers were asked to sell trees on credit, if at all possible, but he would accept corn meal, cash or used clothing in barter.

 DVD Verdict Review - Appleseed
Appleseed is set in a city populated 50% by humans and 50% by Bioroids, which are cybernetic beings made in the likeness of humans.
Appleseed is a mixed bag that resembles a capital "U." The opening sequence is stellar, and then the story drops down into an abyss of exposition and melodrama.
Appleseed is not the end-all be-all release that some have hyped it as: The script is saddled with an outdated plot, and the visual effects are disconcerting where people and texture are involved.

Appleseed, which Shirow created alongside his time as an educator in Japan, first appeared in 1985 in serial form and then 1986 in the first collected volume.
Appleseed was something that I had tried out after not caring much for the Black Magic material of his that was released but felt compelled to try something different since I was such a huge comic book fan who was looking for more during this massive boom of the independent publishers.
Appleseed, while sharing some similarities to Black Magic in designs that Shirow is well known for, instantly appealed to me. The style of the presentation, the characters, the setting, the artwork – just about everything.

All is not lost though, we still have plenty of other Appleseed, in the form of the 1988 OVA, a 1994 Super Famicom game, the 2004 CG production and its planned sequels, as well as talk of a television series and possible live action movie being in the works.
Shirow did revisit Appleseed with his art somewhat recently, showing off some modern illustrations of what was originally supposed to be Deunan in Intron Depot 3(which drew from the Thrilling calendar), but ended up as just another Shirow girl with the evolution of the image.
It gets the Appleseed moniker on the front because the first 96 pages(about 2/3 of it) is a four chapter tale in the Appleseed universe that ran in Comic Gaia several years earlier.

One of the things that intrigues me about Appleseed, though, is that the vast majority of readers will not be so au fait with its roots.
So, as in any good adventure sf romp - and on one level that is what Appleseed is - a wily action hero-type takes on a seemingly ordinary job thinks he's in control and then steadily it emerges that he is being drawn ever-deeper into something Far Bigger.
Appleseed has all the makings of a rip-roaring-if-revisionist space opera, following in the recent steps of authors like Alastair Reynolds and the earlier space-operatic revisions of Colin Greenland.
