There is nothing particularly irritating about this album, in fact it seems to be one of the safest sounding atmospheric rock album releases ever.
The Appleseed Cast had worked so hard to shed the label of "emo," with the Low Level Owl releases, and then seemingly throw all their creativity and in turn, credibility back to square one.
The album doesn't piss me off as much as it simply disappoints, with songs that show just enough artistic ability and creativity to pass off as Low Level Owl B-sides or demos.

To me, this album is essentially interesting as a series of sound collages; there are ample dosages of sound samples, electronic drum beats, acoustic guitar, piano, and an array of synthesized sounds (mostly of the vintage persuasion).
As a rule, the Album Leaf’s only missteps are those songs which are shorter and feel somewhat incomplete, such as “an interview” or “lounge act.” Now that I think about it, this album would be a great soundtrack for an early eighties suspense/thriller film.
If you like the sound of their new album like I do, you’re not going to be disappointed by “The Long Goodbye.” This song displays the same sense of melodic structure mixed with a liberal sprinkling of dissonance — just enough to keep the lead guitarist interested.

The hidden secret to the album, however, lay in its quieter moments, the musical passages that gave the listener a break from normal song structures and allowed one to float along.
Whatever the narrative construct of the album, however, what is clear is the fact that this album is a return to a more pop and focused approach to song writing, especially with the appearance of vocals on every single song here.

Tim Eriksen is a staggering talent who invigorates the tradition of American music with the fire of The Clash and the intensity of Nick Cave, all without electricity.
Tim's self-titled, all-acoustic CD draws material and inspiration from the Anne and Frank Warner collection of American folk songs, the early American hymnody of the Sacred Harp, and a host of other historical and personal resources.
Over a six-record span (most recently 1998's Appleseed release, Spine,) the band's approach evolved from the "folk/noise" of their eponymous 1990 debut to a completely acoustic presentation that lost none of their energy, focus, impact, or genre-spanning international audience of skate-punks and folk fans.

For anyone left wondering: the Appleseed Cast formed in 1997 in Lawernce, KS, released a bunch of albums, and are now signed to indie-haven Tiger Style.
According to the band, Two Conversations is a concept album, with the lyrics and themes split into separate sections: first love, then loss, and finally politics (I admit my description of the concept is a little weak, so please show restraint with your hateful e-mails).
The album picks up a bit near the end, when the band showcases their ability to change styles and master the studio.
