Topic: Appletreewick

  Dales Way
Appletreewick has all the charm of the Yorkshire Dales villages at their most picturesque.
In 1548 William Craven was born at Appletreewick.
He became known as the 'Dick Whittington of the Dales', leaving his poor background as a boy, making his fortune in London's streets of gold, becoming Lord Mayor and returning to his roots to found a school and pay for other improvements in the district.

The Dales Way with Sherpa Van
In any case the main highlight of the day for most walkers is the ruined Augustinian priory at Bolton Abbey, in a fine setting close to the River Wharfe.
Appletreewick (a short walk off the Dales Way itself) and Burnsall are both characteristically pretty stone-built Dales villages, with pubs where you can obtain evening meals without booking in advance.
If you start in Appletreewick or Burnsall you could aim to reach Buckden (milepost 27) or Hubberholme (milepost 28) or Yockenthwaite (milepost 30) today.

 New Inn, Appletreewick
In these dark days of PubCo domination, few villages can boast a genuine free house selling quality beers from independent breweries.
However, the inhabitants of the picturesque Wharfedale village of Appletreewick (pronounced “Aptrick” locally) are fortunate in having two such pubs, one of which, the New Inn, has been voted Pub of the Season for Autumn 2004 by members of Keighley and Craven CAMRA.
Situated on the main street at the west end of the village, the New Inn is a sturdy, whitewashed, 300 year-old stone building of typical Dales farmhouse design and layout and indeed it was also a working farm until just after the Second World War, as some of the old photographs in the bar testify.
