Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) for the Treatment of Autism   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Applied behavioral analysis (i.e., Lovaas Behavior Therapy, Discrete Trial Training [DTT], Intensive Behavior Analysis [IBI]) has been proposed as a methodology for use with children with autism, or autism syndrome, for the purpose of changing behavior.
Applied behavioral analysis for the treatment of autism is considered investigational.
No evidence was found to show that evaluation of the status of the applied behavioral analysis for the treatment of autism can predict clinical events and, thus, be used to alter the treatment of individuals.

Seven Dimensions of Applied Behavior Analysis
Applied interventions are designed from the outset to operate in new environments and continue after the formal treatments have ended.
In behavioral application, the behavior, stimuli, and/or organism under study are chosen because of their importance to man and society, rather than their importance to theory.
The analysis of a behavior, as the term is used here, requires a believable demonstration of the events that can be responsible for the occurrence or non-occurrence of that behavior.

 Autism
ABA addresses changing behavior by applying interventions based on investigating and manipulating what happens before a child’s behavior (antecedent) and after a child’s behavior (consequence) in order to change the child’s behavior.
The investigation of the reasons behind a child’s behavior is termed a functional behavioral assessment, and the results of this assessment is typically shared with the child’s family, teachers, and other professionals working with the child.
Treatment within the ABA approach includes motivating the child through reinforcement, which is something the child finds motivating (such as toys, snacks, praise, etc.) in order to increase a good behavior, and negative punishment, which means something pleasing to the child is removed, causing the aversive behavior to decrease.

ABA4autism.com - Introduction to Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) Procedures for Kids with Autism or Other Disorders
Many parents and caregivers think ABA programs are too simplistic to work on their child's complicated neuropsychological disorder, but don't be mislead, ABA procedures work, although they do require a lot of effort and patience and a lot of money if you visit an ABA psychologist in his office--$75--150 per hour.
ABA procedures require baseline measures of the behavioral problem (either a count or a time measure of the behavioral problem during the assessments), before we introduce a behavioral intervention.
The ABA programs in the eBooks on this web site are designed as guidelines for parents and caregivers of children with behavioral problems and developmental delays associated with neuropsychological disorders, such as autism, and are not a substitute for direct consultation by a psychologist.

Behavior analysis is a natural science of behavior that was originally described by B.F. Skinner in the 1930's.
Some ABA techniques involve instruction that is directed by adults in highly structured fashion, while others make use of the learner¹s natural interests and follow his or her initiations.
Regardless of the age of the learner with autism, the goal of ABA intervention is to enable him or her to function as independently and successfully as possible in a variety of environments.

Teaching Children with Autism: Applied Behavior Analysis
ABA can be the basis of programs addressing a broad spectrum of human behavior, from increasing the productivity of the workplace, to precisely training military personnel, to, indeed, teaching children.
It may seem a semantic argument, but one should remember that ABA is a set of principles and guidelines upon which educational programs (or any number of applications) are based and shouldn't be used synonymously with a specific program.
A change in behavior should be seen in a wide variety of environments, or should spread to a wide variety of related or similar behaviors.

Behavior analysis is the systematic study of variables that influence the behavior of an organism (Sulzer-Azaroff & Mayer, 1991).
Another misconception is that ABA is a specific method of teaching children with autism, and that it is synonymous with “Lovaas Therapy” or “discrete trial training” - this is not the case.
Although ABA-based teaching methodologies have been shown to be highly effective in teaching children with autism, ABA is not a procedure restricted to the treatment of autism but rather a discipline that is based in operant psychology and rooted in the use of scientific principles to study behavior.
