In Western culture, since the Arts and Crafts Movement at the turn of 19th century, the applied arts have grown in importance and recognition.

 Applied Arts Minor
The applied arts minor provides these students with practical skills appropriate to their future work as classroom teachers at the elementary grade level.
To fulfill the minor, students are expected to complete nine units of activity courses (three units in each of three fields selected from art, English, music and theatre arts), as well as a concentration consisting of nine additional units in one of three fields.
Students embarking on the applied arts minor are expected to develop and file a contract indicating the courses they wish to take to fulfill the minor.
