Math 2310 develops techniques for solving ordinary differential equations, with an emphasis on computation and problem-solving; this is continued and combined with linear algebra in 3310 to solve systems of ODE's.
In Polynomials (Math 3200), you will also spend a lot of time finding and writing proofs, but here the subject of your proofs will be properties of polynomials and their roots.
Foundations of Geometry (Math 4600) gives a careful treatment of the axioms of geometry - you may have seen some of this in high school, but you now have a much greater level of mathematical sophistication from which to view it.

Proficiency and attainment in applied mathematics is demonstrated by passing the General Examination that tests the student's ability to probe a new area of research and to exercise critical judgment on a technical issue of current importance in the chosen field of research.
Applied mathematics is concerned with mathematical modeling and analysis of problems from the physical, biological, and social sciences, and from engineering.
The granting of the degree is based on general proficiency and attainment in applied mathematics, together with a demonstrated ability to carry out an independent investigation which is described in a doctoral dissertation.

Working Your Degree: Mathematics - Nov. 10, 2000
Just one-third of graduates from an applied mathematics, operations research or statistics program consider their job to be closely related to their major, the Handbook reveals.  The majority work as top- and mid-level managers, actuaries, computer systems analysts, computer programmers, computer engineers, and in insurance, securities, real estate and business services.
The average for applied mathematics graduates is closer to $53,900, which is 12 percent higher than the overall average.
Where such a program is offered, however, applied math is becoming the degree of choice for students looking to enter the corporate workforce.

 Applied Math Basics - Wikibooks
In math terminology, the number 1 is called the numerator while the 2 is called the denominator.
Decimals are basically fractions expressed without a denominator, rather replaced by a power of ten, and then the decimal point is inserted into the numerator at a position corresponding to the power of ten of the denominator.
It is usual to add a leading zero to the left of the decimal point when the number is less than one.

 Talk:Applied Math Basics - Wikibooks
I think of "applied math" as also including all other kinds of specialized math that can be applied to the real world (trig in carpentry and surveying; boolean algebra in digital electronics and programming; tensor calc in mechanical engineering; probability in medicine; etc).
I tend to think of applied math as mathematical models of physical systems and their solutions (numerical or closed-form).
From the outline of the text, it would seem that this is a textbook aimed at developing basic math skills for people who are training for an entry-level job.

FAS Handbook: Chapter 3: Applied Mathematics
Applied mathematics is inherently interdisciplinary, in motivation and in operation.
Applied Mathematics programs will typically involve a broader range of study within the mathematical sciences and a narrower range of study within the area of application than alternate programs offered by neighboring concentrations.
The Applied Mathematics concentration involves a broad undergraduate education in the mathematical sciences, especially in those subjects that have proved vital to an understanding of the world around us, and in some specific area where mathematical methods have been substantively applied.

 Applied Math Lesson Plans
Real life situations using basic math skills- Give the students a real life situation that requires the use of all the knowledge they have learned, so they can put it to use in a realistic situation.
The Game of Life- The objective of this lesson is to not only work on basic math skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and subtraction, but to also gain an understanding of money and how it is used in the real world.
They're seldom given a chance to apply the skill in a realistic manner and often become bored with the drill of worksheets.

 Basic Electricity - 3DSoftware.com
That is, to receive the same voltage at the end of equal size aluminum and copper wires, you must apply a slightly higher voltage to the beginning of the aluminium wire than to the copper wire.
For example, aluminum and copper are good conductors, but aluminium has higher resistance than copper, so for wires of the same diameter and length if you use aluminium instead of copper you will need to increase the voltage to compensate (assuming you stay within the wire's allowable voltage rating).
Electricity is one of those sciences that is not fully understood at the fundamental level.

 Overview of Mathematics [encyclopedia]
Mathematics (from Greek mathema: science, knowledge, learning; mathematikos: fond of learning) is the study of patterns of quantity, structure, change and space.
The strategies used to achieve success on the game board can also be applied in many real-life situations.
A number system is any of various sets of symbols and the rules for using them to express quantities as the basis for counting, comparing amounts, performing calculations, determining order, making measurements, representing value, setting limits, abstracting quantities, coding information, and transmitting data.
