At the time of the Civil War, the present community of Appomattox was the site of a railroad depot on the line between Petersburg and Lynchburg.

The 22nd Virginia Cavalry was organized by Col. Henry S. Bowen, formerly of the 188th Militia (Tazewell), under the authority of Brigadier General John Stuart Williams.
McCausland's cavalry brigade, of Fourteenth, Fifteenth, Nineteenth, and Twenty-second Virginia Cavalry.
Of the 22nd Virginia cavalry, one confederate was taken prisoner at Loudon County, John Gilpin, on the 16th and William Stillwell was taken prisoner at Harpers Ferry, during this part of their retreat.
