The Appomattox River drains 1,023,851 acres of agricultural, rural residential land and urban land to the James River and ultimately the lower Chesapeake Bay.
The confluence of the James and Appomattox Rivers is at Hopewell.
The 1,598 square mile Appomattox River basin drains portions of 12 counties in the Piedmont, several of which are included in this project's area of study.
