Many towns in Virginia are county seats whose names are formed by adding the two words "court house" to the name of the county.
Ironically, because the First Battle of Bull Run, fought on July 21, 1861, took place on the McLean farm farther north in Virginia, it can be said that the Civil War started in McLean's backyard in 1861 and ended in his parlor in 1865 (neither event, however, marked the true beginning or ending of hostilities).
McLean was a retired major in the Virginia militia, but was too old to enlist at the outbreak of the Civil War and decided to move to Appomattox Court House in order to get away from the Civil War.

Born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia on the lands of his grandfather on February 28, 1834, he was "the seventh of seven sons." George Nethery was married to Louisa Griffin, daughter of Hezekiah and Mary Griffin, in Granville County, N.C. on August 21, 1860.
George fought in the Civil War for 4 years and was at Appomattox Courthouse, Va. on the day of the surrender, Sunday afternoon, April 9, 1865.
George Nethery was wounded a second time in May 10, 1864, at the Battle at Chester Station, just north of Petersburg, Va. He was said to have been shot through the bowels, having a "contused wound of the abdomen." He had to remain out of service once again for a brief period of recuperation.

On one march, from Petersburg to Appomattox, no rations were issued to Cutshaw's battalion of artillery for one entire week, and the men subsisted on the corn intended for the battery horses, raw bacon captured from the enemy, and the water of springs, creeks and rivers.
From this point to Appomattox, the march was almost continuous, day and night, and it is with the greatest difficulty that a private in the ranks can recall with accuracy the dates and places on the march.
