The Appomattox River is a tributary of the James River, approximately 137 mi (220 km), in central and eastern Virginia in the United States.
In April 1865 during the Appomattox Campaign of the American Civil War, the Confederate forces attempted to burn the High Bridge over the river northwest of Burkeville in order to escape the pursuing Union Army after the fall of Petersburg.
The river is a popular destination for whitewater rafting and canoeing.

Until the late 1970s, the river was a free-flowing, fully navigable waterway that brought both commercial and pleasure crafts to Petersburg.
Petersburg is located at the head of the navigable portion of the Appomattox River and because of this the city serves as the local sponsor and as such they have invested nearly $1.4 million in hard costs to facilitate the project over the years.
The plan is to dredge the river, once funding is available, to a navigable depth of 10 feet which will allow pleasure craft traffic as well as some commercial craft traffic.

The Appomattox River Restoration Project began in 1999 when a local, non-profit organization, Friends of the Appomattox, realized that clearing several logjams along the scenic river was beyond the group’s capabilities.
Alecia Daves-Johnson, co-founder of Friends of the Appomattox, was faced with the problem of clearing numerous large trees that obstructed the river’s natural flow and increased bank erosion.
To clear the river of fallen trees and break the logjams, several “shots” were used each day to efficiently remove obstructions too large to remove by mechanical means.
