Apra Harbor is located on Guam's west coast at approximately 13°26'N 144°40'E. Agana, Guam's largest city, is located approximately six nmi east-northeast of Apra Harbor.
Apra Harbor is an improved, natural basin that consists of an Outer Harbor and an Inner Harbor.
Local harbor personnel refer to the passage as the "SRF Cut." Vessels entering the Inner Harbor are limited to a maximum draft of 32 ft (9.8 m).

On 4 September 1945 Blueback arrived at Apra Harbor, Guam, where she remained until 28 November, conducting daily underway training exercises.
She visited Pearl Harbor, Truk, Subic Bay, Tsingtao and Shanghai, China, before returning to San Diego on 29 November.
Blueback conducted one more cruise to Pearl Harbor from 17 February to 4 April 1947 and then carried out local operations and type training along the coast of California until March 1948.

She was re-commissioned as a freighter under contract to the Japanese Imperial Navy in October, 1941, and was used to transport war materials and personnel throughout the pacific.
On January 24, 1943 the Tokai was observed anchored in Apra Harbor by the US submarine FLYING FISH.
Not knowing at the time that these were the Tokai Maru and another damaged ship (Nichiyo Maru), the submarine patiently waited for one week, and then made a submerged attack under the eye's of a Japanese patrol vessel less than two miles away.

Taking on a full load of ammunition and high explosives at the Navy Ammunition Depot, Port Chicago, Calif., she sortied in convoy 12 June, proceeding via Pearl Harbor and the Marshalls to Apra Harbor, Guam, Marianas Islands.
Arriving Apra Harbor 31 July, LST–1086 off-loaded her cargo, took on Army and Marine passengers, and then set course for Pearl Harbor, arriving 25 August.
She repaired at Pearl Harbor through 5 October 1945, when she stood out of that harbor with garrison forces for Okinawa.
