031223-N-3996A-004 Apra Harbor, Guam (Dec. 23, 2003) -- Sailors assigned to the Los Angeles Class attack submarine USS City of Corpus Christi (SSN 705) wave to family and friends who wait on the pier as the submarine returns home from deployment.
The submarine was the first of three Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarines to be homeported in Guam as part of Submarine Squadron 15 and the first to deploy to the western Pacific from Guam.
Guam’s location in the western Pacific significantly reduces distance and transit times, and increases time to perform missions in forward deployment areas, effectively doubling the days they are available for operations, compared to submarines homeported in Hawaii or California.

When the invasion of Guam was postponed by the Battle of the Philippine Sea, the ship joined Service Squadron 10 at Eniwetok 3 July supporting the invasion of Saipan.
After overhaul Lipan departed for Okinawa 24 February dropped fuel barges at Pearl Harbor and Guam, and arrived 1 May. Three days later, as the Japanese intensified the suicide attacks in a costly but futile campaign to hold Okinawa, the tug undertook salvage and firefighting duties.
Based at Pearl Harbor from 1954 on, the tug has continned, into 1969, to meet the towing and salvage needs of the Pacific Fleet from the west coast to the western Pacific.

APRA HARBOR, Guam — A Naval submarine squadron was re-established here Friday almost 20 years after it was deactivated.
The island is a great location that gives quick and easy operational access to the entire region, and Apra Harbor has world-class facilities that required no upgrading, he said.
Corpus, who served as Krol’s chief of staff before assuming command of Squadron FIFTEEN, said Guam has outstanding facilities for family support, which is very important considering submarine sailors can spend half the year at sea.

Once pulled free of the reef and before it could be towed to a designated disposal area the vessel sunk and had to be cut free of the tow at 1.5 NM SSE of Diamond Head in 300 feet of water.

After delivering an Army crash boat to Pearl Harbor, LST–1086 called at San Francisco, 30 May. Taking on a full load of ammunition and high explosives at the Navy Ammunition Depot, Port Chicago, Calif., she sortied in convoy 12 June, proceeding via Pearl Harbor and the Marshalls to Apra Harbor, Guam, Marianas Islands.
Arriving Apra Harbor 31 July, LST–1086 off-loaded her cargo, took on Army and Marine passengers, and then set course for Pearl Harbor, arriving 25 August.
She repaired at Pearl Harbor through 5 October 1945, when she stood out of that harbor with garrison forces for Okinawa.

She had come to a tragic end, the victim of a tropical storm that had beaten her against the ragged edges of Guam's Glass Breakwater at Apra Harbor on August 12th, 1974.
Navy and Coast Guard tugs were unable to assist the stricken tug due to the large swells at the mouth of the harbor blocking their exit.
The immediate concern was whether she blocked the harbor entrance or not, information vital to the supply necessities and strategic mission of the island.

 SMS Cormoran German Shipwreck in Guam
On August 10th the "new" Cormoran left harbor and sailed throughout the south pacific region, spending literally all of her time trying to avoid the larger Japanese battleships that were chasing her all over the pacific.
On December 14, 1914 the Cormoran pulled into Apra Harbor, Guam with only 50 tons of coal remaining.
Due to both the very unstable relationships between Germany and the U.S., and that Guam also had a very limited amount of coal, the Guam Military Governor refused to supply the Cormoran with more than a token amount of coal, hence, she was forced into internment on Guam.
