Lunar Eclipse Gallery: April 24, 2005 On April 24th the penumbra fell across the Moon, producing a "penumbral lunar eclipse." Penumbral eclipses are subtle, but this one was visible as a faint but distinct shading of northern parts of the Moon. As I gazed through the camera Early Sunday morning, 24 April 24, 2005, I could easily make out the subtle darkening of the Moon's northern limb. The Moon was entering the Earth's "penumbra" or lighter part of the Earths shadow, for what is called a "penumbral eclipse."
