Apron Dress   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
The Apron Dress is made of strawberry print cotton and white stretch cotton.
The strawberries on the apron pocket are hand-beaded with glass beads and Swarovski crystals.
For those of you who have yet to hear that APRONS ARE THE NEW BLACK and (wrongly) think that aprons should only be worn in the kitchen (it is not 1952 my friends)...

I tried leaving the pieces perfectly straight as is shown in most drawings of Viking dresses, but found that if the pieces were left straight on the open edge, they had a tendency to hang crooked and to gap at the side as well as bunching under the arm.
The wrapped dress is believed to have been the dress of all classes, but then again, the only grave finds have been of obviously well-to-do women.
I have also worn a tube dress which was made using the measurements of a peplos dress found in a bog in Huldremose, Denmark.

The apron dress itself is believed to have evolved over time from a more shapeless garment to an increasingly tailored dress.
I chose this method of finishing the top of the apron dress in lieu of a plain hem so that the ends of the apron straps are tucked neatly away.
More common alternatives for constructing the apron straps are to either sew a tube of the same fabric as the dress and use that, or to use some form of tablet woven narrow band.

 [No title]
We know, from large amounts of archeological evidence, that they wore something; speculation on what it was has run from skinny apron panels to full, tailored garments.
Pinning the panels to the dress shortens the life of the dress due to the weight of the brooches; the weight also tends to pull one's clothing down in front, causing fabric to bunch up at the back of the neck.
These finds have set SCA scholars to work investigating various types of tube dresses, which are much more comfortable and practical than the rectangular aprons.
