The story was adapted for the screenplay of a 1998 film of the same name, directed by Bryan Singer and starring Ian McKellen and Brad Renfro.
The story takes place in suburban Los Angeles over a period of about four years (from mid-1974 to mid-1978) with most of the action taking place during the first year and the last months.

Led by the disc’s cover artwork, I was looking at "Apt Pupil" without paying much attention to the release, expecting yet another superfluous modern teenage horror film.
"Apt Pupil" is nevertheless a good film and the only real complaint I could have is that it is portraying the unscrupulous Nazi too sympathetic with little remorse.
Columbia TriStar Home Video has now released "Apt Pupil" on DVD and it is another entry in their fabulous line of releases.

 "Apt Pupil"
Apt Pupil devotes a lot of time to hinting that its clear-eyed hero, with his sensitive lips and lithe, hairless torso, might desire something other than the standard-issue girlfriend.
As Williams and several sociologists analyzing masochism argue,[62] the pleasures of sadomasochistic pornography (in which Apt Pupil partakes) depend on its contractuality—that is, the top somehow never exceeds the boundaries set by the bottom.
Yet what is unique to Apt Pupil is that hypermasculinity (both Todd and Dussander have to possess properties of the Übermensch to be able to get away with what they do) is constructed as covert identification with the feminine—and emerges as an instantiation of the monstrous which is not out there but resides within us.

Apt Pupil is a little more fantastical than its predecessors, but its monsters are more from the ego than the id, and kinky and fetishistic as it might be at times, it is often all too believable as a meditation upon the dynamics of power in human interrelationships.

 Apt Pupil
His The Usual Suspects and Apt Pupil are both about evil masquerading as innocence (Verbal's tics and Todd's golden-boy reputation are plausible ruses)--they showcase morally bankrupt anti-heroes to whom telling the truth is not an option if they are to achieve their goals.
Apt Pupil is a richer film than The Usual Suspects, a movie famous and popular partly because its plot machinations were not germane to the outcome--there was no way you could see the ending coming, as it was all a hoodwink, anyway.
Some scenes in Apt Pupil feel overdirected and/or obvious (the dream sequences are extraneous), but the majority of the film is subdued and Singer's handling of the violent scenes is boldly restrained for a film study of a murderer and his trainee.

Apt Pupil: (John Ottman) One of the more obscure collaborations between director Bryan Singer and composer/editor John Ottman, Apt Pupil was adapted from the same collection of Stephen King novellas as Stand By Me and The Shawshank Redemption.
Perhaps the least effective creative touch in the Apt Pupil score is the chant of "Extradite" (by Ottman and members of his crew) during the finale cue, with the underpowered vocals begging for more substance.
One of the weaknesses of Apt Pupil, however, is that the same level of brute force is never realized within the score itself.
