Ecology: Foraging strategy of King Penguins during summer at the Crozet Islands - Aptenodytes patagonicus(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
King Penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) are the second largest of the extant penguin species, having a body mass of [approximately]13 kg (Adams and Klages 1987).
The substantial difference in body mass between Aptenodytes penguins and other species means that King and Emperor Penguins are likely to have foraging niches that differ substantially from those of smaller birds.
Between January and March 1993, 43 King Penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) breeding in the "Grande Manchotiere" colony on the east coast of Possession Island (46 [degrees] 25[minutes] S, 51 [degrees] 45[minutes] E), Crozet Archipelago, were equipped with Multiple-Channel Recorders (MCR) and/or Stomach Temperature Archival Units (STAU).
The Aptenodytes mutual display call is spe- cific to individuals (Jouventin 1982), and a bird must deal with the complexity of this specificity in order to distinguish its partner from conspecifics.
Both Aptenodytesspecies produced a signal con- sisting of a continuous pattern of two simultaneous series of harmonically related bands of slightly dif- fering frequencies (Figs.
There are two species in the genus: the Emperor Penguin (A. forsteri) breeds during the harsh antarctic winter on the sea ice, and the King Penguin (A. patagonicus) breeds in subantarctic regions on beaches.
These data re-emphasize the need for compo- sitional analyses of individual prey items available to Antarctic and sub-Antarctic predators and for fur- ther investigation into whether or not variation in energy content of prey may be reflected in avian uti- lization efficiencies.
Squid is an important component of the diet of many species, however, comprising up to 90% of prey taken by King Penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus; Stonehouse 1960, Croxall and Prince 1980, Croxall 1984).
Because the utilization efficiency of birds is known to vary depending on the food con- sumed (Uramoto 1961), the applicability of the pub- lished data to such species is uncertain.
World-wide there are 17 species of penguin; 7 of these regularly breed around the coastal waters of South America, and 5 within the Magellanic region.
These are the King Penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus), Gentoo Penguin (Pygoscelis papua), Rockhopper Penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome chrysocome), Macaroni Penguin (Eudyptes chrysolophus) and Magellanic Penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus).
Son los Pingüino Rey (Aptenodytes patagonicus), Pingüino Papua (Pygoscelis papua), Pingüino de Penacho Amarillo (Eudyptes chrysocome chrysocome), Pingüino Macaroni (Eudyptes chrysolophus) y Pingüino de Magallanes (Spheniscus magellanicus).

The largest living penguin on the planet, and one of the two members of genus Aptenodytes.
It is a colonial species and is found primarily in the Antarctic.
