Ghost knifefish - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The ghost knifefishes are a family, Apteronotidae, of knifefishes.
They are distinguished from other gymnotiform fishes by the presence of a caudal fin, and can be found in the neotropical regions of South America.
"Apteronotus milesi, a new species of ghost knifefish (Gymnotiformes: Apteronotidae) from the Cauca River, with a key to apteronotids from the Rio Magdalena-Cauca basin, Colombia.

Apteronotid species are readily recognized as the only gymnotiform fishes with a caudal fin and a dorsal organ (a longitudinal strip of fleshy tissue firmly attached to posterodorsal midline).
There are in addition 12 manuscript names for species currently in preparation, bringing the known diversity of Apteronotidae to 64 species.
The Apteronotidae is confined to the Humid Neotropics, ranging the Rio de la Plata of Argentina (35° S) to the Rio Tuira of Panama (8°N).

Also, we have found that some families of electric fish, such as the Apteronotidae, are particularly abundant in 'white' waters, while others, such as the Sternopygidae, are most abundant in 'clear' and 'fl' waters.
I have also discovered a pronounced morphological sexual dimorphism in several species in the family Apteronotidae, the most diverse family of Gymnotiformes.
Another species in the Apteronotidae family was recently studied by a colleague (Eric Hilton) and I, for which we have described the osteological bases for sexual dimorphism.

This file contains a systematic overview of Apteronotidae, featuring links to books, other pages on the web about Apteronotidae, pictures etc. Common names in different languages may be also available as well as a short dutch description to the taxon.
All gymnotiform fish have the same characteristic elongate shape linked to the use of electricity for locating objects.
Species diversity and systematics of the Apteronotidae has been reviewed by Mago-Leccia (1994), Albert and Campos-da-Paz (1998), and Albert (2001). Apteronotid species are readily recognized as the only gymnotiform fishes with a caudal fin and a dorsal organ (a longitudinal strip of fleshy tissue firmly attached to posterodorsal midline).

The primary objective of my research is to gain a better understanding of the complexity and evolution of electrocommunication.
It is possible to identify individual members of the Apteronotidae and Sternopygidae families of weakly electric fish by the "signature" frequency of their electric organ discharge (EOD).
In my research, those "signatures" are used to identify individuals and to monitor their communication and activity behaviors for periods as long as several months.

 Profile
One of my preliminary findings is that the distribution and community structure of the 40 or so electric fish species in this region is strongly influenced by the location of tributaries, and by the physiochemical features of the water.
For instance, diversity appears to increase immediately downstream of tributaries, and some familes, such as the Apteronotidae, are significantly more abundant in 'white' waters while others, such as the Sternopygidae, are more abundant in 'clear' and 'fl' waters.
I have also discovered a pronounced morpholgical sexual dimorphism in several species in the family Apteronotidae, the most diverse family of Gymnotiformes.

New ghost knifefish found in Colombia | Practical Fishkeeping magazine
Maldonado-Ocampo and de Santana also provide a new key to the other members of the Apteronotidae family found in the Magdalena-Cauca basin to help scientists identify other species of ghost knifefish.
The new species brings the total number of apteronotids to around 46, with eight of these being found in the trans-Andean region where they make up 17% of the total family diversity.
For more details on the new tropical fish species see the paper: de Santana, SD and JA Maldonado-Ocampo (2005) - Apteronotus milesi, a new species of ghost knifefish (Gymnotiformes: Apteronotidae) from the Cauca River, with a key to apteronotids from the Rio Magdalena-Cauca basin, Colombia.

Two new species of knifefish have been found in the Amazon basin in Brazil.
The two fishes, which are members of the Ghost knifefish family Apteronotidae, have been placed in the genus Sternarchorhynchus and were discovered in Roraima state in Brazil.
Carlos de Santana and Adilia Nogueira, who described the new species in the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters, named the species as Sternarchorhynchus severii and Sternarchorhynchus caboclo.
