We took a wildlife safari into Venezuela's interior: an area called Los Llanos (the plains) which is really as close to Botswana's Okavango Delta as one can get in terms of the area being a bird haven, half the year flooded, half dry.
We visited at the end of the wet season, meaning there were still many flooded grasslands filled with birds and we could travel up the Apure river and its smaller tributaries by long metal canoe (with outboard).
Until a few weeks old the young fall from their nests when threatened, landing in the river water in which they swim until it is safe to come up.

The most important wetland sites of the western Llanos are the "Módulos de Apure" (Apure Modules), "Esteros de Camaguán" (Camaguán Marshes), the central and western low Llanos, and the palm savannas of the eolic flat in the south of Apure.
In addition, the "Cuenca Orinoco-Apure" project is actively under consideration, which aims to make the Apure, which flows through the heart of the Venezuelan Llanos, navigable to commercial vessels and allow their passage from the Atlantic, via the Orinoco, to Colombia.
Associated with this are plans to dam many of its tributaries to provide water for release during the dry season and maintain water levels, which may have a serious impact on natural flooding cycles throughout the region.

From Barinas to the Apure River we were in the high llanos, which doesn’t flood in the rainy season like the low llanos, which began after crossing the bridge (under repair) over the Apure River.
Once in Apure state across the river, birds were everywhere, in contrast to the morning, and we had to resist the temptation to stop every five minutes so that we could arrive at Hato el Cedral before dark.
Nearby, in the roadside ditch, we saw the River Tyrannulet, which Nancy and I had seen here in 1992, but was not identified with certainty until a few years later.

Coincidentally, we had an wheel bearing replaced on a rental Trooper (Caribe-locally) in San Fernando de Apure, although our part was in stock and didn't necessitate a full day in the shop.
There were Orange-fronted Yellow-finches and a Snail Kite in the GM dealer's parking lot, and from the river bridge in town you may look down on Pink River Dolphins.
Note that this *can* be one of the finest birding roads in Venezuela, i.e., 14 species of parrots in 200 yards of birding, occasional Harpy flyovers, (and rarely, jaguar crossings) good flocks, some nice hummers, etc. Best when log trucks are inactive.
